Per Murph and Andy. At least I think I heard that.

"Fired" seems a bit innacurate. Sounds like a layoff but I guess in the end it is the same for him.

Never wish this on anyone...

I'm not sure how to feel about this. Losing Keeler is a good thing, in that I don't have to read his poop anymore.

However, it may be a sign that the Register's sports page is turning completely into AP and USA Today copy/paste snippets.

I miss the days of the Big Peach

I side with Murph and Andy on this - it's a mistake. Why would you let go of your most controversial (sports) columnist? He was always worth a few clicks from me, whether I agreed with him or not. That's a few less clicks from me now... Not doing much for their exposure... But maybe the "clicks" were the problem...

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

Was told yesterday that DMReg also has closed its Ames bureau location, and that was something learned entirely by accident. Sounds like it's becoming just "a paper in central Iowa."

Actually fired is accurate. Layoff is the term that has become misused in society as it implies a possible future opportunity to return.

Fired has become associated with disciplinary or performance terminations, which is technically not always the case.

700 people getting laid off is a bad thing, also the demise of newspapers in this country is also a bad thing.

Also, if they replace the entire sports page, will there be any local coverage anymore?

Somewhat agree...now if the "Juice" and "Metromix" writers survive and this guy gets canned something is wrong.

....and sorry CW the racin' blog was good.

Fired is accurate but inaccurate.

To soften the blow, the employer uses the word "layoff," even though both you and the company know that there's no way you're coming back.

When I was part of a plant closing last year, they used the word "layoff," even though all of us knew that there wouldn't be a plant to come back to. In our case, in my meeting, we were ready to leave and had a nice joke of that. Usually, though, it seems to comfort people to hear "layoff" instead of "fired," even thought "fired" is the reality.

Someone didn't like his Cyclone baseball article. Now who is going to cover the Clones?

I would not agree with the underlined portion. The newspapers failed to adapt to a changing market. I remember in the mid-90s talking to publishers about migrating online and their attitude was terrible about it.

They really thought people would always NEED newspapers.

How wrong they were and now they are reaping their just rewards.
