well shoot, between sportstalkmatt and now keeler, the venting threads are going to be down to marty, and apparently nobody listens to him anymore since he hasn't been subject of a thread in months.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

Crazy to think that the Cedar Rapids Gazette is the best paper in the state now....

The Gazette has been the best paper in the state since Gannett bought the Register. The Register has been a disaster since Gannett bought them.

In the corporate world it is not fired or laid-off. It is RIF'd.

Reduction In Force. ("force" as in workforce)

Agreed. Shame on anyone that would cheer anyone losing their job due to economic conditions.

A huge problem with the Register is there is no content in it. They give it away and I still wont waste my time with it. The sports section used to be 5 or 6 pages on a weekday, the last few times I have got the paper it was 2. At one time they would cover ISU football games like crazy now we get a little write up and that is it. Newspapers killed themself and have noone to blame but them self for the lack of sales. They dont understand what their readers want.

I thought he died when I saw the tweets about him without knowing what they were about. I guess being laid off beats that?

This is bad news for sports fans, anyway you slice it. Its not like Keeler will be replaced with a better writer... on the contrary, his position is gone. Now there will no longer be a sports columnist whose main job is to cover ISU, Iowa, UNI, and Drake. Plus, several hundred other people lost their jobs. I don't see how anyone thinks this is good news (unless they believe Keeler will be replaced with a better writer, which I think is unlikely, hope I am wrong though).

Beer is going to taste especially good tonight.

Do you really celebrate when hundreds of people get laid off and the state of Iowa loses its only position dedicated to covering the instate colleges? This is bad news for sports fans.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

700 people getting laid off is a bad thing, also the demise of newspapers in this country is also a bad thing.

Also, if they replace the entire sports page, will there be any local coverage anymore?

Exactly, how people think this is a good thing is beyond me.

I get my ISU news right here and I don't give a **** if the DMR ends their sports section tomorrow. This is not bad news for ISU fans.

He never had a lot of content IMO anyway. Randy Peterson and Andrew Logue will probably be charged with filling his hole.

And yes I realized what I just typed.

Yeah, because nothing screams "Big time college athletic program" like a school that doesn't even have a legitimate regional newspaper columnist covering the team.

It may be fine for you, a diehard Cyclone who goes to Cyclone websites, but what about all of the casual fans out there? Less exposure for ISU athletics is never a good thing.

So, Keeler's take on ISU athletics was good exposure?
