I was at Peppers this weekend too and noticed the floor. I never remember it being that bad. I just love Peppers because they play good music. No offense to any other bar, but I can only listen to rap and Drop Kick Murphy about 5 times before I'm ready to stab my face.

I love and miss the Keg Shop and fire sales....

Nothing beats $6.00 cases of Aspen Edge, Cheap cases of Miller Light plastic bottle cases, cheap tall boys, ect....

I once had a keg and bottle of Jager donated to my party....help to make it a fun night.

Fall of '05 they sold $5.99 cases of Twisted Tea in all 4 varieties. While I know that Twisted Tea is a chick drink, IT WAS $5.99. Also, we discovered bottle bongs about that time. Due to its complete lack of carbonation, Twisted Tea is incredibly pleasurable to bong. Let's just say it was a hazy time of my life.

I went to Sgt Pepper's for the first time last weekend (it was Phuel when I was in school) - what's the deal with the floor? It was like they waxed it and sprayed it with WD40, people were crashing all over the place. Is it always like that?
Yes. I have no idea why. I'm not going back there until somebody tells me they stopped pretending their bar is a skating rink. Seriously, when there are half as many people sprawled out on the floor as there are standing, something might be wrong.

(It only changed names this year; it was Phuel until the summer/fall.)

And I've got to echo all the other thoughts about Peppers... that place has some serious problems.

I also have to echo the points about Keg Shop. I went in there once last semester to buy a bottle and a case, and the stock was extremely low. They didn't even have Jack!? I commented to the cashier, "You guys going out of business?" and he gave me the same, "Really busy weekend," line. I called BS right away, but left it at that.

IDK what you're talking about. I love hip hop and NEVER hear it in Ames. I usually hear country (which I hate) and 80s and 90s rock....

Not when it comes to music.

Peppers has the best music except you can tell the employees don't dig it a lot because they always change it when a good song they don't know comes on. Es Tas is a great place and you can't argue with a juke box.

Are the owners of Sgt. Peppers the same owners that had Phuel and Mojazz? It seems like they've owned a couple buildings over the years and theyve always rotated between being a bar/coffeeshop. I don't know if they just don't know how to run a business for more than a couple years or not.
Before Peppers/Phuel I actually enjoyed it when it was half of the bar and just a coffee shop, it had a cool vibe there. Maybe when Stomping Grounds expanded it really hurt their business?

Same people. Let's just say they have their "own way" of running businesses.

Speaking as someone who REALLY likes local coffee houses, Stomping Grounds can kiss my butt. They charge exorbitant prices for inexcusably small portions, the quality is equal to or lower than all comparable shops in Ames/Des Moines/Iowa City, the service is glacially slow, and they want customers gone so badly that they removed ALL the power outlets so that you can't plug your laptop in anywhere. I refuse to spend any money there, and encourage everyone I know to go elsewhere. I'm really glad Bookends and Caribou are open so late; they're better choices in every respect.

All that said, I miss the short-lived Café Santa Fe. That was a great place and always seemed to be moderately busy. I was so depressed when they closed out of the blue- I went there 3 or 4 times a week. Now collar-poppin', Keystone-swilling fratties pretty much live at Capone's. What a waste of space (and oxygen).

I turned around in their parking lot last Sunday night around 10:30pm, and all their lights were on and there were cars in the lot. Wouldn't that mean they're open now?
