I'd hire him if I was a mid major. Its not like he's done anything horribly malicious in his time. Houston probably sees SMU having success with a "big name" guy and figure why not.

His show cause penalty has expired. It is a good hire by Houston. The guy can coach, and he knows that area of the US in terms of recruiting. If they hire him, I bet he gets the Cougars into the NCAA's in 3 years.

However, he better watch those phone calls.

Hasn't the NCAA relaxed the texting and phone call rules a little? If so, he will be OK.

My thoughts as well...I thought I read somewhere that the penalties he got the show-cause for would no longer be penalties today. Obviously he has a history of pushing rules, so who's to say he wont try pushing the limits of other rules.

This is kind of the issue I have. If a school wants to take a chance, fine, but with his history, it should almost be a "First Warninig Given" situation. If he screws up again, under your watch, it's going to be a big issue. I feel the same way about Calipari as well. Any of these coaches who leave a mess in their wake when they leave, should come with warning labels like, "We won't take the next one lightly." Of course, we are talking about the NCAA here, which makes me think even more that Houston should be careful, they aren't a blue blood and would probably go down hard if something happened.

And yes, I know this is a necrothread, just liked the topic.
