Say what you want about Rhoads, but his era made ISU football exciting, and brought passion to the fan base. Without that groundwork, it would’ve made Campbell’s job even more difficult.

As others alluded to, he was a perfect fit after Chizik.

Win or lose ISU needed someone to come in and simply love being there and bringing new life to everyone.

If that was the bar, he went beyond it.

Great interview. Love PR. But is program was basically derailed to bad recruiting classes. The staff couldn't tell players if they would be at playing at a P5 school or not. Image that, that had to be really hard. His 2012 was close to 8-4

I think the realignment scare recruiting was a bigger deal than most of us realized at the time, and would admit now.

CPR is a great man and what happened in the past is in the past. Unfortunately his mismanagement of his staff at the end of day cost him his job. If he would have replaced Herman with a successful OC he probably doesn’t get fired when he did.
His assistants couldn’t recruit. And Mess as OC was a huge misfire

The main issue was his staff couldn't recruit well enough. You look at the dropoff he had and it directly follows his recruiting. He did well in the beginning with Chizik recruits, but once he got more of his guys, the talent really dropped off. Realignment made recruiting even more difficult.

It would be amazing if he would ever talk about Mangino!

I'm just to the part where they are talking about realignment and I don't know if we will ever know how lucky we were that the Big 12 stayed together. As we all knew last year when watching OSU and WSU--there but by the grace of God we go.

I was also struck by the mention of the Kansas State game. That's why I try really hard not to get into a snit when coaches say stuff like they wouldn't change things about what they did after a game. Hell, Rhoads said similar things after Kansas State. (And Campbell has done the same thing.) But, it's obvious that Rhoads thinks about and knows he made mistakes in that game. Just because they don't admit it in the heat of the moment doesn't mean they go on with life thinking that they shouldn't have kneeled to end that game.

It seems like Rhoads last couple of recruiting classes WERE a bit better. But I'm just going by memory, so who the hell knows?!?

The problem with the end of the Rhoads era was that he couldn't spin out of the downfall. Not many coaches can. That's why last season should be so impressive to all of us. 2022 was BAD. Things stacked up against 2023. And, yet, this staff was able to spin out and have a successful season.

Great episodes. Awesome to hear from Coach Rhoads again.

There is no Matt Campbell without Paul Rhoads. He made ISU football fun. Wanted him to stay our coach until the K-State debacle. Everyone knew it was over then.

Just finished this because I'm slow.

I'm certainly not going to complain about how things are and how things have gone since CPR left, but god damn did I want it to work for him here.

Idk, it didn’t seem to affect other schools like Kansas State or Baylor like it did us. Those 2 schools weren’t finding a better home either. I kinda thought that excuse was overblown.

Think Paul was a really hard worker and really put everything into the program. I kinda thought as things headed south he was micromanaging more and that probably made things worse, even though all he wanted was to fix the situation. Still had some great wins in 2009-2012.
