Kind of a "why what went right went right and why what went wrong went wrong" from the KSU game.
Probably will focus more on the run game because the game broadcast doesn't allow a lot of great looks downfield.
Lot of debate I noticed on the boards about playcalling vs execution.
Keep in mind football is a numbers game. Whoever has more people at the point of attack usually wins that particular play. The spread adds a new dimension to that- There will be one unblocked guy (if schemed correctly) at the point of attack, and we are banking on our guy being more athletic than their guy.
KSU had a very good defensive scheme, especially vs ISU's 2x2 set. They were able to keep 2 safeties high, and give pretty much a 4-1 look in the box, but the 2 OLB's set up just outside the tackles so they could play both the run and the short pass.
ISU took advantage of this by "featuring" for the first time this year a run/pass option to the #2 WR where the QB is reading the OLB. If he bites on the run, JB throws the quick pass, if he drops into coverage, it is a give. First play of the game was this. Great read, great throw, WR slipped and fell.
From an x's and o's standpoint, this is the perfect way to attack this Defense
ISU's 3x1 set gave us a better run look because KSU still stayed 2 safeties high, so instead of going 7 on 7 in the box, we were able to go 8 on 7.
On the frontside read, It appears Barnett is a little "keep happy". WR's have outside leverage to block the give to SJ. Even with that, the play is blocked for a nice gain, but barnett trips going through hole. Play got 4 but was blocked for more.
First third down of game, Lenz is open, Barnett with a bad throw into dirt. Once gain, great decision, needs a better throw. Felt like that was the theme of the game for JB.
Pistol look in 2nd series. The scheme is there for a nice look to run weak. 3 on 3 in the box with a QB power look. Schematic-wise, the play is there. Brown scrapes over the top and makes a great hustle play from the backside LB spot for 3. He's a great LB.
Appears we like the 3x1 look, and numbers wise it is a great look for us. Zone read, this time reading strong side DE. KSU stacked their Outside LB to toy with run game, but not stunting from it so far.
The read is a give. RT takes a horrible angle on the stacked LB who forces the play a lot wider than it is designed and its a short gain. If that guy is blocked, its SJ on a safety at 12 yards.
The motion we used to get SJ out of backfield gave us a huge numbers advantage, but he was a checkdown throw. If the WR's are blocking for him out there, that is a huge gain.
Tried some more running from 2x2 set and the read man made the play. Very easily could blame the qb, but upon closer inspection, the MLB scraped off the back of the center who never saw him and forced the play back into the read man. Not a good formation to run standard zone read from with the overhang LB taking away the QB. We tried this later as well which had me scratching my head.
More run/pass zone read to Brun. great looking play. ISU in 3x1 to the boundary which I think would have been a great run look all game as well.
now reading BSLB in the zone read. Barnett for 9 on a great read. Would have been for more but the TE in the slot ran straight down the field and never got a hand on the guy he was supposed to be blocking who made the play.
On the 3rd and 1 from the 20. Barnett keeps it and we have a first down on the frontside read. Brown chased SJ down from the inside on a great defensive play. I can't tell who Barnett was reading. Sometimes the D just makes play. Situational thing though. know the situation and if you can get the first, get the first.
That's all for 1st quarter. Not nearly as upset with the playcalling as I was during the game.
