Kyle Kelm is.....

Tell him he is not cutting it. Look when you are offered a scholly you are expected to be a good player. If your not then you should not be playing. Your not recruited to be on the bench.

It's like everything else in life. If you are not good enough to do something then you have to move on. If you are offered a job and you don't perform they fire you.

That is life. So if a kid has to learn this early then so what. It's major college sports. I am not trying to be a jerk but you have to be capable to play. That is why they dont give every Joe Schmoe a schollarship.

Trust me all of the big coaches do it. Coach K does it. Royboy does it.

So you want it to be a business when it comes to over recruiting. But you want it to be about the Student Athletes as well, they should be students first, be the right kind of kid, etc.

You can't have it both ways.

You can't recruit "The Right Kind of Kid" and say you're "building the program the right way" but when the kid comes to school, does everything in the classroom and on the practice floor your ask of him but isn't quite as good as you thought when you recruited him, run him off so you can sign someone else. That's a little two faced.

And if you aren't recruited to sit on the bench how can you bring in 6 or 7 players a year? We only start 5, there are 13 scholarships what do the other 8 guys do? When was the last time Iowa State had a basketball rotation 13 deep?

I'm fairly confident that our coaches have a better feel on how the scholarship situation is going to pan out than any of us...there is a 99.9% chance that they aren't going to have to pull anyone's scholarship...i'm shocked that so many people actually think they'll need to, and seem so intent on speculating on how bad it is that they'll have to.

Look at the scholarship count. They will have to. We have zero scholarships to give, YET we have multiple offers out there.

Unless, Boozer or another player has said "I am gone after this year" we should not be offering any other scholarships. It's really that simple

This thread reminds me of a normal night at work, watching people overreact to pieces of information, but not having the whole story to be able to understand the whole picture.

I'm not real comfortable with the idea that we're out there making tons of offers. I am comfortable that our coach is an honorable man until proven otherwise. So far, he's proven honorable over and over again.

This is one where we have to wait. If we start running people off Tim Floyd style, that's a major problem. Since every team in college basketball seems to have a couple of transfers at the end of the year, the only wise thing the staff can do is to be out working on future options, lest they be caught flat-footed with a depleted roster.

Be patient, folks. I've got to think that the man knows what's going on. Whatever the whole story is, I'm sure we'll have enough of it at the right time to make a solid judgment.

I'm fully aware of the scholarship count...as is the coaching staff.-and I am still telling you that there is a 99.9% chance that nobody's scholarship is getting pulled.

Maybe it is possible the coaches know of a certain player who has made his intentions know that he plans to leave at the end of the year. If you were said player, would you want the coach posting on a message board or telling the media that "X" player is leaving at the end of the year so that is why we are over recruiting our number of scholarships.

Think about it! The coaches get paid pretty well to do what they do. They know what they are doing. You simply may not have the same information that they have.

But we were told by the spin doctors that the turnover problems were solved...

As a former college athlete, I'm sure you are aware that player turnover happens everywhere in every sport...certainly not to the extent that it has happened here lately...but as a former college athlete, I'm sure you would know enough not to just expect it to stop 100%.

But we were told by the spin doctors that the turnover problems were solved...

There is two types of turnover. Good and bad. If you replace the turnover with a better player/employee it is good.

Unfortunately the turnover in the past was completely voluntary and with short notice. That kind of turnover is always more difficult to replace. But if you know someone intends to leave early enough, you can find the right person to make the turnover good turnover.

Honestly, I could care less.. I just want the best team on the floor. I just think it's funny that there are people that come on here saying the chemistry is so good, nobody will leave, the recruits we brought in are awesome etc. It's obvious that Mann was a recruiting miss and will leave, if anything because of the silence of these same apologists on that issue. Boozer will probably leave too. Both of these guys were clearly borderline players when we signed them. I would rather see us pass on them and leave a scholly open then count on them to leave on their own...

As a former college athlete I'm also sure that you know that there ARE recruiting misses for every program in the nation-even occasionally Roy Williams and Coach K...but maybe you should tell McDermott that Mann and Boozer were borderline players, and that he needs to not offer players unless he plans on them having an impact here...

I do know that 85 is right, Williams and K don't fill out their limits and never suggest a player leave. If they leave it is purely on their own for more PT. A buddy of mine went to play at Duke and sat on the end of the bench for two years, not once did Coach K ever mention transfer to him, just told him what he needed to work on... He chose to play football his last two years instead of transfer because he was close to graduating already...

I can name 4 guys that coach McCarney pulled a scholarship from early while I was playing and they pretty much knew it was coming because they were well aware that they weren't very good.

They also know that they will have players leaving for the NBA nearly every year...it's also a whole other world recruiting at UNC and Duke than nearly every other school school in the country (other than UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas..)...but they still have recruiting misses, and they still have player turnover, whether it's players going pro, players transferring, or players deciding to play football instead...

And NO Coach K does not do it. The NEVER use all their scholarships. They always leave one or two open. Like I said, is poor taste to offer somebody a scholarship that belongs to someone else.

I know for a fact that Michael Thompson was basically told to take a hike. He had grades but was not cutting it on the basketball court. Was told he would never get any minutes.

Also I beleive Botang was told the same.

The team chemistry might be as good as some have suggested. That has nothing to do with players wanting to leave for more PT. Boozer or Mann or whoever may love their teammates and experience at ISU, but they may also see that it is going to be difficult to see the court. You can have good team chemistry and still have players that would rather leave.

The bottom line is the coaches have far more infomation than we do (cause you know, they are the head of the program). I have a feeling they know what they're doing. No need for everyone to get their panties in a bunch.

+1.

I can love my co-workers, but see that the only opportunities for better work are somewhere else, and decide to leave. Happens all the time.

Too early to make much of a judgment on this deal.

You really don't get it. UNC and Duke never fill up their scholarhip amount!! EVER. You said you are a Duke fan, so you should know that. So when people leave, it is not b/c players are being given other players scholarships
Duke never fills their scholarships, but UNC almost always does.
As for the scholarship, I have some of the same concerns, but the staff knows what they are doing. Just wait and see instead of engaging in a pointless argument.

I don't think it's pointless. It's a point of discussion as we are still recruiting for scholarships that aren't currently open. This is a message board, for discussion. These type of situations are exactly what message boards are for...

This discussion isn't even about our situation anymore.

I'm just amazed at the number of people that a) don't know what overrecruiting means (it means that you want to upgrade talent with each recruiting class - it does not mean to cut someones scholarship for a better player) and b) that don't think that pulling a kid's scholarship is unethical....at best.

Regardless of whether things work out or not (they likely will), well......if a scholarship is a year by year thing, and a program only needs to make a one year commitment to a player, I'm sure most of you are totally cool that Wes decided this year wasn't a good year for him to be at Iowa State.
