After seeing Fred alternating DH late in the game, was it totally attributed to his FT shooting %?

Although it had zero effect last night, I wondered why DeAndre was taking the inbounds and consequently shooting free throws late. In the NCAAs, I hope Ejim or Morris are our first and second choice for any inbound. Seems like Georges is the safety, who would be my third choice for big shots at the line.

I feel more confident in hogue making free throws than Thomas.

Hoiberg doesn't. Thomas has shot a pretty low number of FT's this year to determine how good he really is but Fred did say he was the best FT shooter on the team.

Agree, Tomas is not a good ft shooter. I wonder if Thomas is being put in because he can handle the ball better than Dustin? But missing free throws is just another turn over, so I don't know.

I think it was also in part to have another ball handler in there (Thomas). Wanted to make sure the ball would be inbounded and not turned over. Then sub Hogue back in for defense and rebounding.

We don't have anyone that is a true liability from the FT line, so I think the substitutions are instead about ball handling. The only thing you want to do in a late-game situation other than hit your FTs is not turn the ball over, so you get your 5 best handlers in for offense.

Ellerman is only shooting 25% from the line...

also Hogue is shooting 67% and Thomas is at 64% so not a big difference, i'm going with the extra ball-handler theory

DeAndre can be. When he misses, he misses bad.

This. His first two were awful last night and he was way off at WVU. He's had multiple airballs this season. The thing with Deandre though is once he swishes a few, he generally swishes them the rest of the game.

I think Fred put Matt in at the end of the game for the sole purpose of getting some FT shots in. The game was basically out of reach and I think Fred was trying to have Thomas get fouled so he can get some confidence at the line.

He's an incredible FT shooter in practice but has a mental block in the games right now. You could see this the way he kind of threw up his arms after his first miss and looked at Fred funny.

You're right - those were ugly. That said, we have 3 guys that are shooting pretty well and another 4 that are shooting pretty much equally mediocre/decent.

Here are the FT% this season of the guys in our rotation, in order:

Morris - 81.1%
Ejim - 78.5%
Niang - 75.0%
Hogue - 67.0%
Thomas - 64.3%
Long - 63.6%
Kane - 62.7%

Give me the toughest guy to catch the inbounds pass.... Kane. And give me the extra ball handler... Thomas. Seemed pretty good to me

There's many better FT shooters than Kane when the games on the line but he does seem to shoot better in pressure situations. I'd take Morris on the inbounds all day.

Kane nearly airballs a FT every game. I blame the way he cocks his shooting hand so far back with the ball. Seems like instead of shooting towards the rim he's trying to hit some imaginary spot ~12 FT high midway to the hoop and hoping that it goes in.

Thomas' FT shooting is a bit of a mystery; small sample size but still. I'll bet he hits 20 FTs in a row in practice all the time. He does seem to have some pressure/mental block issues when it comes to games; went through it on 3 pters but was able to work through it by getting enough shots up in games. Just hasn't seemed to get the repetitions to work through the in-game FTs.
