High school juniors usually don't get offers until the spring before their senior year, right? Just because we haven't offered him a scholarship yet doesn't mean we won't in the future.

Xavier probably is not as good as they were last year. That said, their defense is crazy good. They have 7 shutouts this year and just completely shut down IC City High's RB who was 4th in the state in rushing.

I believe CR Xavier's first-team defense has been scored on in one game (out of 11) all season long. They have 7 shutouts and 3 games where their opponent was shutout until garbage time in a blowout.

Regardless I will be interested to see what happens this Friday; good games across the state. Valley-Ames is the most interesting.

Right. But he is a high school senior.

Like I've said before, I think he'll go the JUCO route.

Proud of my HS Alma Mater (class of '76). After last night's victory, Ames High has to be considered the odds on favorite to win the state title IMO.

Xavier has shut out 7 opponents this year. Coach Sabers of Iowa City High who got blasted 35 to zero last night at Xavier says this is the best defensive team in high school he has ever seen or played. To think Xavier couldn't have a chance against Dowling, Valley or Ames is silly on your part after that endorsement.

Not so fast. I've seen it for 20 years. Upstart program with wild talent plays established team with coaching, players and tradition built over the life of its program (Valley, Dowling, Xavier, pre-split Ankeny, SEP, City High). In the west part of the state, there is always a team or two that is "this year's threat". At the end of the day, for many years, the final four in the west is Dowling, Valley, SEP and Ankeny. That has changed this year with the Ankeny split and SEP being a little down, but I've seen it a lot with teams like Ames, CB Lincoln, SC East, Johnston, DM Lincoln, etc. They go 8-1/9-0 in regular season and it's going to be their year. Along comes the big boy and season's over. Should be a great match-up with Valley.

By no means is Ames the odds-on favorite at this point. Hell, I wouldn't call them an odds-on favorite to get to the title game. Having to get through Valley AND Dowling/Waukee is a very tall task, and that's not even considering that if they get there, they'll have to beat Xavier/Pleasant Valley/Bettendorf.

This was just the second round. That's almost always way too early to call the favorite in 4A.

I watched 6-3 or something Mtown go to the state championship beating undefeated #1 Dowling. Works both ways.

That's a lot more rare than seeing the upstart run into a blueblood buzzsaw. It all comes down to the guys in the trenches. You can't beat Ames without putting pressure on Straub; you give him time, and he'll shred you to pieces. I have a feeling that one of the three potential opponents they'll see the rest of the way will be able to do that (I definitely think Xavier will if they both reach the title game).

Well, my experience with high school football was that one season. I don't doubt that you are correct.

If by "6-3 or something", you meant 9-0, then yes Marshalltown did do that. And you found the exceptoin to my statement. The IHSAA site does not have active records for all rounds before 2007, but I did come up with this:

  • Since 2000, there have been 13 championship games. The Marshalltown team you referenced is the only one that didn't involve either Valley, Dowling, SEP or Ankeny from the west side.
  • Since 2007, there have been 12 semifinalists from the west side. 11 of them are the four teams named above. Marshalltown in 2009 being the lone exception. I have a strong feeling this would go back long before 2007-just couldn't find records.

I'd love to see Ames beat Valley on Friday. Just saying that history is against it. And then to beat Dowling would be another surprise.

If Valley and Dowling both win this weekend, they can carpool up to Cedar Falls instead of playing at their shared home stadium. Cool that the players have the chance to play at the UNI-Dome but it does seem a little silly.

How pathetic is it that a high school that has tuition that is as expensive as some colleges, gets to recruit athletes because they are a private school, has money coming out the wazzoo, and yet... they can't even build their own football stadium? It must be God's will that they mooch off of the public schools in the metro. **** Dowling.

Thanks for clarifying, as I said I only knew about that one year for HS football, glad we could be the exception. Beast our 1-8 this year that I think we finished.

Marshalltown was 12-0 when they beat Dowling to go to the state championship in 2009, unless you're talking about a different season.

Color me shocked though, normal seasons we don't win half as many. Maybe we SHOULD give Creekmur a shot.

wtf? Catholic schools give some assistance to struggling families who want to sent their kids to a parochial school instead of some public dump

I sense sour grapes, and the old "They recruit" whiney-a#s responses

Are there Catholic kids playing sports in public schools?
............OH...THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE RECRUITING CATHOLICS!!!!! not fair!!!

Catholics schools have to fundraise year-round to exist

Catholic parents who are homeowners pay tuition to catholic schools PLUS pay property taxes that subsidize public schools

They are double-dipped. We pay a sh#tload of property taxes to a public school system we have zero kids attending.

Who is mooching off of who? public schools the biggest money pits around
