I do Hustle up the Hancock in Chicago. It forces me to get into shape once a year. Going to try and get under 20 minutes this year.

Each year more than 4,000 people climb to the top of John Hancock Center to raise funds for lung disease research, advocacy and education. In 2013 more than 2,500 participants indicated they or someone they know has been touched by a form of lung disease. Participants choose from two climbing categories--full climb (94 floors) or half climb (52 floors).

Hustle Up the Hancock

We also package $30,000 worth of food for Haiti, thru our church. We have been part of the group in charge of the about 4 years and we do it on Palm Sunday.

This is something worth doing, but if you don't give up sweets how does it help you get into heaven?

Has anyone stopped to think about how hard it would be to give up alcohol during March Madness...with this team? **** I'm going to start drinking now just thinking about the stress.

Last night was perfect. I'm giving up alcohol for Lent and a fat Tuesday game against Baylor happens this year. Then stupid me goes and gets the stomach flu which basically means I have no strength, no energy, no no desire to come near alcohol for the last time in 6 weeks. Sucks.

Not Catholic, but thinking about giving up alcohol just cause I bet I would lose weight not drinking for 6 weeks .

First year I gave up alcohol I lost 15 pounds like nothing. I don't think it was the booze calories but rather the 2 AM Hardees runs and entire boxes of Cheez-its that were the problem.

they're talking about Vegas in the other thread - last year, Ash Wednesday was our second day in Vegas. The husband definitely didn't fast on that day or that Friday. Had some meat too.

We get to Vegas late Friday nights and always make sure to just eat at Earl of Sandwich at Planet Hollywood after midnight so we don't break any rules! :)

My step daughter has a friend that died unexpectedly in high school. This girl donated her organs. There is a guy in Chicago that got her lungs and we got to meet him. He does the climb every year and formed a group called "Kari's Climbers".

A bunch of Kari's high school friends get together every year for this climb. This guy needed another organ about 15 months ago and another friend of Kari's match him and donated a kidney to him.

It has become much more than a climb to us!

I'm saying you are taking on a worthy cause. I wish more people would donate time or money than just giving up a personal vice.

On a different note back in college (early 80's), I gave up alcohol, got into shape and did intramural wrestling, just to prove to myself that I wasn't an alcoholic

Honestly, personally, I'm kind of "giving up" the legalism of the Catholic faith for a bit. I grew up in a parish that was very legalistic...you darn sure went to church on Sunday, and you better not eat meat on Friday, and you did the moves all by the book...but there was very little faith outside of that. People acted no differently than non-christians during the other days of the week...like faith stopped at the church doors. I saw thru that particular act when I was in college and unfortunately chalked it up to 'religion is BS' and left my faith mostly behind.

I came back to my faith a while ago in a way not associated with 'church'...and have been working on building something on my own so that I won't fall back into the phony faith where if you do the actions you can act however you want aside of that. I'm attending mass because I think studying the word and worshipping in a community are both needed things, but I'm still trying to keep a bit of distance to make sure I end up in a strong faith community, not one that does lots of dances to appear more holy.
If you're interested in checking out different churches in the IC area, I'd recommend Veritas. I think you'd like it based on your comments.

Thanks for the recommendation...and without turning this more personal/political...If people find faith thru that community, great, but when I clicked on the 'about' tab and saw 'cornerstone church' and 'salt company'...no thanks. If it's your thing, that's fine...not mine. The people I knew in salt company in Ames during my time were the only people more focused on spiritual theatrics than catholics. Putting up a front of holiness while hiding their true ways.

I'm giving up Iowa State sports. If we win a national championship, you're all welcome.

As an old-school, but non-practicing Catholic, I do give up meat on Fridays. I cook a good, healthy fish-bread-vegetable meal every Friday of Lent. It's not a big sacrifice, to be sure. But it helps me to think about the season, and the way I should try to live my life.

Ice cream would be one of the last things I would eat after drinking. When I've had something to drink, I hear a voice ask, "How about some cheese and crackers?"

If we ever had cheese and cracker around, I'd probably go after those too. Well, nice block cheese. Popcorn is something else that is delicious with rum.

I'm giving up Facebook.

I don't need the distraction anyway as I work to complete History 495.

I will be giving up nothing. And eating meat throughout lent, because well, I just don't care to start attending church, and think lent in itself, is just silly.
