Ok I haven't been around for a while but the season is fast approaching and something keeps bothering me when I think about the Army game.

First, I am sorry if this had been discussed already but it will also need to be mentioned again the week of the game.

It is very common when the opposing team takes the field the fans BOOO them. Very OK with this since I usually have participated especially when it is Iowa or Nebraska.

But now we are about to have Army come in and I sure hope we don't boo are future Army Lieutenants (officers). Some of which will most likely end up on the battlefield with in a year.

I for one was in the military albeit the Army NG but I have the utmost respect for the Active Duty guys more. So I have a plea to start talking about not booing and passing it on to others not to boo that weekend. Maybe Jon Miller needs to bring this up too, to get the word out.

I would sure hope we could be more creative than booing our future Military leaders.

I know it is corny but something like “Go Army beat Navy, but Today is a Cyclone Dayâ€￾ would be far better. Think of a stadium giving a praise to the Army team but reminding them also this is still our house.

Now I know some of the Navy people on here would argue about saying Go Army beat Navy but to bad I was in the Army and it is my thread. Don’t like it think of something else.

Why would you boo any team? low class.

It is all in your prospective.

Do you think the opposing players at BB games come out and say….ohhhhh….how nice. I'm getting 5 claps for me!

No….it is mocking. It is a forced clap. Everyone gets the same treatment. No more…no less. It is no different then entering a contest and getting a blue ribbon only to find out that everyone that signed up for the contest also rec'd a blue ribbon….just because they signed up...not because they were deserving of any special recognition.

I always viewed this a being a good sport - no need to boo the other team or mock them. I'm old school I guess but I think being a good sport is important - as this thread shows sportsmanship is a lost art these days.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. You are showing respect for the opponent. The crowd isn't mocking the player.

Maybe that is the beauty of the 5 clap tradition. You can view this gesture in a way to fit your own desired message you wish to send to the other team.

Screw them. They are the enemy. They'll get plenty of praise when they aren't on our football field, out defending the country.

They are the enemy to us on the field of play.

And I'll boo Army all day long because I hate Army and I hope they lose every game they play.

I'm sick and tired of everyone making everything into more than it is. It's a football game. I'm not making comments about your service to your country, your heritage, your mother's cooking or anything else. I want to see my football team kick your football team's *** on the field of play. That is all.

You seem to be taking this game very seriously...:skeptical: It's fans like you that ruin gameday experience for the rest of us.

IMO boo all you want. It's going to happen either way. They're the opposing team. They come to Jack Trice to try and beat us..I'm not cheering for that.

I just wanna booo trueclone2. For no reason really... Should be a good warm up for the season.

Anyway, seriously I agree with not booing. It's not like we need a "hero's" welcome, but why not something different then booo. Maybe a golf clap..

I will boo them during the game. But to me, the pregame isn't a time to boo someone. If there is a PF on an Army player I will be just as p!ssed as the next guy. Booing during the game is expected. But when they come out of the tunnel I will applaud them.
For me, it is under the same category of clapping for an injured player walking/getting carted off the field. There is a time and place for booing and a time and place for just respecting someone as a person (who happened to not sign a letter of intent with ISU). I would clap for an Iowa player if he were injured during a game...but the only player UofI fans would clap for when injured is Jake Christiansen!

It would be nice if we could do something special to recognize these young Officers in training. How about send an email to Pollard and suggest we do something to recognize their commitment to country?

There was a sign they brought over from Clyde Williams Field and is on a brick pillar next to the Jacobson Bldg that reads "Honor Before Victory" it should apply to more than the team.

I made this: We could use it as a design or something for shirts

I understand that some of you feel strongly that it is just a game and to that you are correct. However just remember one thing when you boo them entering the field. It is the Military Schools that help give you that right to boo them. So go ahead be the butt you want to because you have that right to do so, just don't forget to yell really load thanks for defending my right to boo you.

It is just another game but it is not just another college team. Enjoy your right to do as you want.

havn't read every post but when we boo other school's, it's very possible that some of the players are involved in ROTC and whatever else.

They may go on to be in the military. I say it's fine to boo everyone.

Way up there
Wow, just another example of people going way overboard. I don't think anyone meant that they're going to boo these guys the minute they walk on the field until the game is over, I think most were trying to make a point that for the 60 minutes of the game Army is just like any other opponent. Just because they chose a certain occupation doesn't mean they deserve special treatment. Just like any other opponent they should be respected before and after the game, there are plenty of athletes that are going into admirable professions that deserve equal respect.
