On this weeks game and ISU’s rushing attack:
There’s a reason Iowa State is favored by 7 this week.
I think this is a game where the cyclones will be “punching down” a weight class and I feel like this team in specific has been good at that.
Though they haven’t beaten any great teams and lost a lot of close games to evenly matched squads, the Cyclones have rolled vs inferior competition.
Obviously improvement must come in the run game. I would like to see some additional creativity, innovation and promise on the ground vs a weak WVU defense this week. I think a key reason as to why the cyclones can’t run the ball is due to the predictable and bland run plays.
The Cyclones run very little motion on plays that end up being runs, they very rarely run and misdirection or pull any lineman or run and pitches/reverses etc. This was evident in the game vs OU. One big reason as to why OU was primarily able to move the ball on the ground vs our solid rush D was because of the scheme to their run game. They ran motions, RPOs, pitches, fake pitches, options, QB powers, and other run plays that are created to cause confusion for the defense.
The Cyclones simply aren’t good enough up front to just line up and run the ball up the middle or off tackle, that’s just a fact. Creativity and innovation needs to be shown if the cyclones want to avoid being one dimensional.
