This thread is a joke, some of the statements are hilarious and sad at the same time. Some of you people really need to think before you post some of this tripe.

What did Basabe average as a freshman? What did White average as a freshman? Two years in a row they have had a freshman step in and put up those numbers. I think Gesell has a chance to score 8 pts and average 4 assts if he ends up being the starter. Iowa actually has some depth with their bigs next year so I'm not sure Woodbury will get enough minutes to put up those numbers, but to say it is expecting way to much is just not true.

I honestly think Gessell is going to be challenged by Clemmons out of Michigan. Fran is going to play the 5 best players and that could possibly mean Marble starting at PG again...I know that's not what they want to do, but it's a possibility.

Either way they have a nice group of young players. They play uptempo so they are going to put up pts and have a lot of assists.

No way can the highlighted be anything other than under the "hope" category, right now.

Just give me a quick rundown of all this "depth".

Now THIS is a ridiculous statement. Would I rather have Larry Bird, or Luol Deng?

I would take Larry Bird and I can tell by your question that you would also. But, I have seen some crazy ***, cocky Bulls fans on here and I would bet they would take Deng.:twitcy:

i watched gesell in that all star game last week and he played great - he's more athletic than I would've thought.

he'll take his freshman lumps, but he's going to be a really good player for iowa. my guess is he will likely be the guy other teams' love to hate, which should bode well for iowa.

Wow, Iowa's actually got a pretty good recruiting class. Gesell and Woodburry are both going to be studs, and it looks like they have some other solid players coming in as well. Should be a tourny team in a year or two.

This whole white and black thing has nothing to do with Lucious vs Gessell. What sets them apart is experience. There is no valid argument you can make to prove that Gessell will be better than Lucious next year. You have a guy who was a PG on 2 Final Four teams and will be a 5th year senior vs. a guy who wasn't good enough to be PG on his own AAU team (Paige was their PG) and a true freshman. Not saying Gessell won't develop into a good player, but to compare the 2 at this point is not even close.

Lucious >>> Gessell

I agree, he's going to be decent right away and very good by years 3 and 4.

This is some great reasoning. Gessel isn't good because he played with another very good player, while Luscious is good because he played on a team full of very good players.

Some Iowa fans are getting borderline delusional when it comes to expectations for Woodbury/Gesell next year as true freshmen

I think realistic fans of that team should not expect anything from those two until they are both juniors. They both will need quite a bit of time to adjust and learn.

Not sure it was a talent issue but more an issue of MP being a super stud and Gessell being more of a true 2 guard. Most of what I have heard is that he has traditionally played the off-guard and has struggled with the point guard role so far. But I heard that a while back and he has probably gotten much better in the role similar to the way Horner went from 25 ppg in high school to a true point in college at Iowa.

There is some "hope" there but Iowa does return their 3 primary "bigs" from last year in McCabe, Basabe and White. All of those guys probably should be 4's and not 5's but McCabe at the 5 definitely creates some mismatches as he shot 44% from 3.

They return Olaseni who was a pretty sought after recruit and is athletic as heck for 6'10". They are bringing in Woodbury and Meyer (6'10") who are both very nice recruits.

It's young depth but they have a few talented 6'10 or bigger guys for the first time in forever.

LOL on Woody. He would struggle with Brit Griner.

I agree here, To me I don't care what most people think, Gesell and Woodburry will never be that good, they are looked at as good because of their numbers but we need to realize they play in South Sioux, which is NE basketball and NE basketball has never been (and never will be good) so ye he can average 25 points against a state of nobodies. I mean they don't even play in the Top or Highest level of ball in NE. So I completely agree here on the LOL on both of these guys ever being "Studs" they will be like the rest of the "Talent" form Sioux City.. nothing but scrub bench players. .

First off, Lucious backed up Kalin Lucas at pg. I don't think it's unrealistic for Gessell to be able to statistically do what Lucious did as a junior...6pts, 4asts and shoot 34% from the floor.

Saying Gessell is not as good because he didn't start at PG on his AAU team is laughable. Paige is one of the best pg's in the country out of high school. He is better than Lucious.
