I'm guessing this was a mutual parting. The units he's been in charge of have never produced an ounce.

Thank you my immediate thought....

Two areas that i think are vastly underdeveloped for this phase of a coaching regime.

#1 by a long shot....WR - our WR development has been horrible. I've been complaining since tubbo was at KU and his WR were so dominant outside both catching and blocking that they single handedly gave the RB the corner...Briscoe, Meier and the others were very well coached in all phases.

#2 our OLINE....I know a lot of people will put QB here..but its simple...no OLINE then your RB and QB will struggle...if i had to start anywhere it would be with the OL because you watch the "good" teams, they have "good" OL play regardless of how bad their qb play is...now that said, if you have an awesome qb, he will overcome a lot of shortcomings from the OL...in our case, our qb play certainly has not be great by any stretch but, i give them a pass until the OL knows how to block a blitz for more then 1.4 seconds!

If true, i wish Luke Wells all the luck in the future at his new home!

Oops got wells and pope confused, because I assumed wimberly would be complaining about his own position coach, and they both have short last names. I wouldn't mind seeing pope go on an unrelated note.
Don't agree with this, great recruiter, great coach, to me a lot of our issues are, WR, OL, and offensive coordination, Courtney and Bleil being the primary blame, to me Wells moved to TE this year, which position-wise was not unproductive, Sturdy is WR coach, I could see him moving to OC, did a decent job at Washington st before we got him.

We have room for one more.

Pipe dream. If it's true that Chip Kelly goes to the NFL and the Oregon OC is slated to become their headcoach, then I see Frost as their new OC. If all that don't pan out he has no problem waiting for a better program than ISU coming after him.

Don't get me wrong I would love him to come here, but I don't believe it will happen.

Yeah, Ernst Brun was awful.

Ernst has been solid. (I'd argue it's more on his god given talent, seeing as his blocking has been poor)

But before Ernst the TE's were awful last year and the WR's were awful the 2 years before that. Is that all on Wells? No. But there is a reason he went from WR's to TE's and it wasn't because he was coaching well.

Provided we don't lose any recruits from this I am more than ok with this. Worst coach on our staff IMO. Got demoted and was awfully quiet this year while coaching a TE group with only one good player. Try to replace him with a dynamite recruiter.

While I agree that Wells position groups haven't been great, he hasn't had a lot to work with. We was at WR when our best threat was a TE and we had little in the way of WRs, then he was at TE when we had Hammerschmidt and Howard who just aren't great receiving threats. Then he had Brun and Brun wasn't an easy coach early on from what I have heard. Wells did a nice job with him so I don't want to beat on him too hard. He could have also left on his own. We don't know yet.

If he got fired, my guess is we will bring in another offensive mind. I don't think it will be a new OC, but think along the Sturdy line. Scott Frost has been in the running for HC spots. A year or two as OC would put him over the hump. He also a former DB who works on offense, which interests me.

I think from reading through Wimberly's tweets that this was likely not Wells' choice.

49m ago - I can't believe that just happened.
47m ago - Its a business in the game of football nothing is guaranteed
35m ago to tweet to Coe - u heard?
32m ago - coach Wells leaving
21m ago - just don't be trusting what all these coaches be saying

In before someone calls you creepy

Look at last year, look at the WRs the years before, and look at every other TE not named Ernst Brun this year.

I guess Pierce Richardson would be the disappointment to me. Hammer and Howard just aren't going to be dynamic TEs and I'm not going to bash on him for that. The WRs before weren't very good either. Not saying eh was a great coach. I'm just saying that you can make the evidence what you want.

I agree. I can have them if I want. Having said that, you don't know Oregon won't hire Rich Rodriguez or something and leave Frost in the cold. Long shot, sure, but who knows. I think Oregon may look for something bigger than Frost but who knows.

Ernst has been solid. (I'd argue it's more on his god given talent, seeing as his blocking has been poor)

I agree. If I have to give up a position in terms of coaching right now it's TEs though. We actually have some good talent there with Bruns and Bibbs. Maybe I heard wrong but wasn't Brun kind of hard to coach early on. I think he said that in an interview somewhere.

I would love to bring Scott Frost in, unfortunately he is almost too good for us only a position coach. If Rhoads screws around with the OC job some then maybe Frost would make some sense. This could get interesting though because I don't see Rhoads demoting or firing Mess for at least another year, but at the same time both Sturdy and Scott Frost come across as more legit OC's for the time being.

I am happy to hear this, he has always seemed to under achieve in his 4 years. Wished this would've happened sooner. Im sure he's a good guy, but this hire never panned out. Tine to move Mess back and get a new OC.

Brun's best play prior to the bowl game was a TD on the left sideline where he ran the wrong pattern and made a great burst to the endzone. CPR also commented on him making an unnecessary one-handed catch in a game. And his blocking on quick outs wasn't much.

Having said that, I thought he made a lot of progress this year. Great athlete and natural leader who is becoming a very solid player. Don't know whether that was the influence of the coach or just having the opportunity to perform.

Bleil and Mess next please and thanks CPR.

Worst case would be then to promote Sturdy to OC. Can't be worse then the OC under CPR....
