This hurts. I am on the side that Maddie would help us this year. She made amazing progress. I hope this doesn't frustrate her too much. I hope she redshirts and develops into an even better player. I am sure she will if she has the chance.

I worked with a juco player committed to NC State this fall who practiced with ISU players last summer. I asked her about Rosie - and she rolled her eyes and gave me the distinct impression that Rosie was.not.good.

Her quick exit would seem to fit that. We were so desperate for bigs that taking on a project was not out of the question. Rosie must of seen she was in over her head. As mred noted, she would then find ISU not be a good fit. The thing of it was she must of wanted to play and did not see that fulfilled here. Regardless, we would have cheered her on.

It was a tragedy. Taking many months away from something they love, unavoidably sets a player back. Jordan is a clear example of that. Maddie did not impress me last year. But she was determined to improve and and had. I was liking her play and she was showing potential. She has time.

It was actually stated somewhat bluntly in the Ames Trib article:

What Gambino's departure means for ISU | Ames Tribune

But as it sat currently, her development made it unlikely that she was going to be a significant contributor this coming season.

How come the the typical quiting excuse always includes something like "....and focus solely on academics" and is always followed a few months later by a signing announcement at another school.

I actually thought at the time that maybe she figured Div 1 wasn't something she could hack but than she turns around and signs with the Badgers. I know she was a late long shot signing but still sorta ****** me off she would sign and than quit after a couple weeks of class.

That's too bad for Maddie. I was impressed from with her improvement from last year until this. I hope she takes the redshirt and we can still have her 3 more years. She'll never be a Poppins, but if she can continue improving from last year until she graduates, she will be a very nice contributor in the end.
