To anyone that says that McRoy didnt do any coaching is not true. McRoy brought coaching experience to the program.
Come on now. It's far more fun to meltdown and act irrational.
My hope for the other spot is Jim Boylen, but somebody else with that amount of experience would work too.
Id expect Boylen comes with baggage. Yes you may get the one player for one year. But he was fired for a reason and that would be a long term deal.
The only problem is that he is an extremely green coach. TJ and Fred can recruit. They've shown that. Lutz brought a lot to the coaching aspect and adding Matt adds basically nothing coaching-wise to a head coach with only 1 year under his belt. Who is Fred going to learn from? I'm not a fan.
OK - McRoy had 14 years of college coaching experience, both as an assistant and HC. He was also a college player. Abdelmassih hasn't coached or played. This hire is for McRoy's spot.
I completely agree with thisOK - McRoy had 14 years of college coaching experience, both as an assistant and HC. He was also a college player. Abdelmassih hasn't coached or played.
If he is a replacement for McRoy, their resumes are vastly different...

11-year assistant in the NBA
2 years with Izzo
4 years as a head coach, with 1 NCAA tournament
When can I pick-up his bags?
You don't need to hire a guy with the same experience. We hired Fred with 0 experience after McD with 20(some) years of experience. By your logic we would have had to hire someone else with 20(some) years of experience. Who cares if the resumes are different.OK - McRoy had 14 years of college coaching experience, both as an assistant and HC. He was also a college player. Abdelmassih hasn't coached or played.

Yeah, no kidding.
For those who don't know, here is his bio:
Matt Abdelmassih - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports
He's been working with Fred for 3 years now, I'm going to safely assume Fred has a fairly good idea what to expect and what he's getting from him as an assistant coach.

I like the hire. A few other thoughts to add to the mix:
1) The staff is always going to be evolving. TJ isn't quite so green as he was when GMac hired him. Maybe at this point they'd rather TJ spend less time recruiting and more time teaching/coaching...
2) This has to be a huge motivator for the young GAs/administrators on staff. If they're interested in getting an assistant job, now they know Freddie is willing to reward hard work/potential.
3) For those concerned with the lack of coaching experience, remember that Jeff Rutter is still on staff as Director of Basketball Operations. He's got something like 16 years of coaching experience and is probably the most overqualified DBO in the country.
4) Does this help us close with Okoro?
5) As others have said, I fully expect the other opening to be an Xs and Os guy with a lot of experience. I would presume we'll have a little extra money, as Abdelmassih would be at the lower end of the pay range.
