To anyone that says that McRoy didnt do any coaching is not true. McRoy brought coaching experience to the program.

Id expect Boylen comes with baggage. Yes you may get the one player for one year. But he was fired for a reason and that would be a long term deal.
I'll take Fred's eye for talent over your eye anytime. If you are dogging on this guy because he is "green" in your perception, then I question your loyalty to The Mayor, for he is also this color green you speak of.

OK - McRoy had 14 years of college coaching experience, both as an assistant and HC. He was also a college player. Abdelmassih hasn't coached or played.
If he is a replacement for McRoy, their resumes are vastly different...

Matt has been our "in" for everyone in NYC that we are currently recruiting and have signed (Sledge) and he couldn't even recruit, but he could network. Now he'll be able to be in that city and use his connections and speak with this kids. Matt is a guy on the rise and I like that Fred didn't let him get away and is giving him a shot to go get us some ballers from NYC.

Anybody that questions Hoiberg is a non-believer. In a perfect world, this type of blasphemy would be a capital offense.
You don't need to hire a guy with the same experience. We hired Fred with 0 experience after McD with 20(some) years of experience. By your logic we would have had to hire someone else with 20(some) years of experience. Who cares if the resumes are different.
I was just stating this hire was for our 3rd assistant.
Ya you can thanks Abdelmassih for Sledge and for Royce as well. He also has NBA ties which is a theme FH seems to like.
I like the hire. A few other thoughts to add to the mix:
1) The staff is always going to be evolving. TJ isn't quite so green as he was when GMac hired him. Maybe at this point they'd rather TJ spend less time recruiting and more time teaching/coaching...
2) This has to be a huge motivator for the young GAs/administrators on staff. If they're interested in getting an assistant job, now they know Freddie is willing to reward hard work/potential.
3) For those concerned with the lack of coaching experience, remember that Jeff Rutter is still on staff as Director of Basketball Operations. He's got something like 16 years of coaching experience and is probably the most overqualified DBO in the country.

5) As others have said, I fully expect the other opening to be an Xs and Os guy with a lot of experience. I would presume we'll have a little extra money, as Abdelmassih would be at the lower end of the pay range.
At first glance I agree. For a manager he may have great connections and had an impact, but we should be able to get a guy that has demonstrated success as a recruiter/assistant coach on at least a mid-major level.
Is it likely that his connections are needed with guys we are currently in on/going after, and to lose him would set back recruiting enough that we are now forced to promote him? That 3rd assistant has traditionally been about short-term return, so either way it is not a huge deal to overpay.

Complain about experience all you want but there is a program that has been to the FInal Four two years running with a guy they hired with very little experience. Talent trumps experience. Always.

I am thinking that Fred is trying to plan ahead here. He obviously wants to bring in an experience-heavy coach to replace Lutz. So why not save some extra dime for the next guy while still bringing in a cheap east coast recruiting guru? Sounds like a win-win to me.
