The fans did not want to fry the kicker. The fans were puzzled by the coach who sent out the kicker in crucial situation when everyone knew the kicker just didn't have it on that given day. The fans gave the kicker a great ovation after his first and third kicks today. Try scoring a TD coach...

He’s clearly frustrated and is going to want that one back. I will cut him some slack, as everyone is going to let pressure get to them at times. He’s been even keel since Day 1 and this is really the first time he’s starting to feel a bit of pressure from the fans.

I think he knows changes (aka firing of people) need to happen. But it’s his good buddy, so he’s just lashing out.
Could be, good post.

Feels like the beginning of the end

For Campbell at ISU you mean? I had that thought too. This is shaping up as the first real heat he's taken, and he's not responding well at all. It might be the first real cleavage between him and his fan base.

If he goes, this is what everyone will point to.

So his response to fans finally having expectations is to lash out at them?

And lying about them blaming the kicker for the loss?
I never said it wasn’t stupid or that it was ok. First line says he’s going to regret saying that.

But I am human and make stupid choices and mistakes all of the time. He had a bad moment but I’m not going to kill the guy who is clearly frustrated and knows what he has to do but doesn’t have the guts to do it, and that’s fire his good friend Tom Manning.

Edit: I am withholding the torch and pitchforks to see how it goes from here. If something like this happens again from Matt, then we have a problem. Just my perspective on it, but I’m not going to tell anyone else how to feel.

We had the ball at the 50 yard line or near it what 2 or 3 times tonight and couldn't muster points let alone a freaking first down. If I'm Heacock, I'd be so pissed. Sure, there were some mishaps by the d tonight but still held K-State to 10 points.....the goal of an offense is to score points......what the hell does Campbell see in Manning other than a good friend? I must know

I think he’s realizing a lot of the options he’s turn down in past offseasons are no longer going to be there going forward.
well his stock is in the ground so he's not getting poached by anyone. But say he takes one of the million jobs he's been offered....say Michigan for example......Michigan boosters would run Campbell out so quickly if he kept retaining Manning like he's currently doing

You don't wanna start ridiculing the fanbase.... especially for something they didn't even do. You lose the fanbase.... you're toast.

I didn't say he is done.... I said it "might" be the "beginning" of the end. Calm down moron.
It sure doesn’t make me want to go to a game this year. Was going to try and make the next home game against OU, but starting to think I might pass.

Hooooooooooooooooooo boy

Are you kidding me? That's Jim Walden level commenting right there. The general sentiment here was the kicker never should have been put in that position for a 3rd field goal attempt after the second miss bounced off the post. No one blamed Gilbert for that game last week. They were put off by the most conservative offense in the league leading to indecisiveness in crunch time for two consecutive games.

For those who do not know or remember: Coach Jim Walden boldly commented at the start of the 1994 season he was as good or better of a coach at Iowa State than Earle Bruce or Johnny Majors. Walden was starting to feel the heat after switching to triple option and running a system that seemed to incur many injuries and a win expectation around 3-4 a season. The 1994 season ended with a record of 0-10-1 and his departure.

Yeah. Looks like he can't take the heat ( which is awfully minimal here), wants to deflect, or already has the next thing lined up.
Agreed. Feels like a guy who is getting ready to move on. I think CMC is seeing his stock drop and is ready to get out of town before the posse. The fact that he “allegedly” had a new contract on his desk last year and never signed it should have been telling.

Someone will still take a shot at him. There's probably gonna be a few more Big 10 openings, Louisville is going to open too. Maybe he parachutes to Colorado or something. If he decides he wants to leave then he'll leave

He's feeling the pressure to make changes already. Thought it might take a lot longer. Feeling confident he's in a middlle of the pack Big 10 job next year if he's already feeling the heat now
My gut is he isn't feeling pressure, he just knows he has to do something. He's a young coach, has had lots of success, has not had tons of adversity, not used to firing people.

It's a learned skill, I had a guy working for me, people told me to fire him for years, and I waited, but I waited too long, and tgey were right. If you think you might need to can someone, then you prob need to do it.
