McDermott (turned down) Ohio State

If I'm tOSU, at a minimum I call Buzz Williams, Tony Bennett, Frank Martin, Steve Wojo,

Why oh why did we never mint any Greg McDermott commemorative coins?

Didn't CW tweet out that he talked to Hoiberg and Fred said he didn't have any interest in the job? I still don't think he wants to be back coaching college anytime soon.

How many coaches have ever admitted that they were really interested in a job and just didn't get it? I have zero ill will toward Fred for his career decisions but I also don't take him at his word much anymore. That went out the window when he talked to the U of M. I'm with you that I don't think he wants to coach in college but he's also smart enough to know he's running a dumpster fire in Chicago and a $20 or $30 million long term gig in C-bus wouldn't be a bad place to land.

This is true. He does have success in lower level conferences. I see him racking up a lot of wins against the likes of Rutgers, Illinois, Nebraska, Penn State to make his recod look good and get to some tournaments. Heck, even Fran got to an NCAA tournament in that conference.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. When he was at ISU, we WERE Rutgers, Illinois, Nebraska and Penn State.

If it comes to pass this just strikes me as a "meh" hire. He may do fine, but is fine good enough for that AD and fan base? Their resources and recruiting base make that a top 20 job and I can't believe Smith didn't make his move on Matta without having some assurance that he could get a home run hire. Chewy is a swinging bunt single. Of course ISU luck dictates that he'll go there and abso*******lutely kill it.

He could do well there. I thought he'd suck at Creighton once Doug was gone but he's done well. Still never made a Sweet 16. To follow up Matta with McD is a huge step down.

He could be the nicest guy in the world and that's all well and good, but man his last season at ISU, 15-17, (4-12), seriously could probably be the worst coaching job in the history of the program. If there is a worse one I'd be shocked.

Here are the last 7 ISU coaches:

Orr
Floyd
Eustachy
Morgan
McDermott
Hoiberg
Prohm

6 of the 7 took ISU to the NCAA Tournament - can you guess which one didn't?

You fire Thad Matta to hire Greg McDermott?? That makes no sense.

5 of 7 took ISU to the Sweet 16. Greg has never been there in his entire career.

I get the harsh opinions but I think the "McDermott can't coach" crowd needs to pump the brakes. Was he awful at Iowa State? Yep! However, after he moved on to CU he completely changed his offensive approach regarding tempo and spacing. Unfortunately for Iowa State, we were basically an experiment for Greg and it took him a few years to finally figured out that you can't recruit players suited for uptempo basketball and ask them to play a slow grind you out style. He has also become very active in the transfer market and the guy could always recruit. I think Greg would do just fine at OSU.

He had a good looking team this year, but missed the tournament the other two years without Doug.

He's won 43% of his Big East games since Doug left. I get the injury this year to the PG but the Big East has been incredibly top heavy with Villanova and Xavier and typically good teams like Georgetown and Marquette haven't done a whole lot, so Greg has had his chances to win.

I should have said relative to my expectations.

McDermott has always been able to recruit. He brought a lot of talent into Iowa State (but obviously couldn't keep them) and he recruited a lot of good players to Creighton. If he has truly changed his coaching philosophy then I could see how he could thrive in the B1G.

I also think he is a good person. I just can't forgive him for convincing Jamie to sign contracts for a bunch of new assistant coaches and then bolting for Creighton a week later.

They were god awful the year after Doug left, and it wasn't just Doug, they lost four starters. But they brought in a couple transfers, who sat out the terrible year. Then they were decent for a year, while a couple more transfers sat out, along with redshirting Justin Patton, who's soon to be a lottery pick.

I will give him credit for restarting that program, after it was at it's peak in the Doug's Jr and Sr years.

Agreed, we had 3 multi season NBA players, a double double machine, Scottie C & a mid-major conference player of the year on the same roster and we win 4 conference games? We'll always have that road win at KSU i guess..
