Just seems a little risky to me. I like McDermott but a 9 year deal? I'm shocked, to be honest. Pollard is either going to go down in history as the best AD we've ever had or the guy who got us dropped from the Big 12.

I guess everyone needs to be more patient with McD, whether we like it or not. He'll get a minimum of 6 years with that contract.

You have got to be kidding me...

He has no motivation to succeed now because Pollard is paying him regardless.

ISU men's basketball: McDermott plans with long haul in mind | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

A unique protection clause in McDermott's original six-year contract, signed March 22, 2006, has given him an automatic three-year extension that now runs through July 1, 2015. Iowa State didn't publicly announce McDermott's amended contract, signed June 10, 2008, since it was only a provision to the original deal.
If this is the case, it really diminishes my support for Jamie Pollard. No one should get that type of deal in coaching or otherwise.

Especially since over half the men's basketball teams in the country are dealing with APR issues and the Jiri thing only resulted in a VERY minor slap on the wrist...

You know, part of the reason for these kind of contracts is for recruiting. The hotter the seat the quicker the athletic department is to resign for an extended length. Look at Prince at KSU, got a new contract last year and was fired this year.

You would hope their would be some unique deal that would also offer Iowa State a way out of it that would be cheaper then simply buying out the remaining years in the contract, if it would come to a point when that would be necessary. If that is not the case I would really have to question Jamie Pollard on this.

The fact that that clause was in the contract seems to indicate that we were expecting penalties, and possibly even more.

Ugh, there's very few really good coaches that deserve a nine year deal. There's a bunch more coaches we could hire that could win 3 conference games a season.

I'd like to see McDermott win a real recruiting battle. All three of our BIG recruits were connected with an assistant.....TJ with Craig, Jean with Wes, and Daniyal with Colvin. Marquis was tight with Kantrail, but how many real recruiting battles have we won where we didn't have an in? Or the guy didn't commit as a freshman? JVB?

Tell me what coach that doesn't rely on his assistants for recruiting and then I think you have a valid point. Why don't we talk about the dads or AAU coaches that end up with jobs at the respective university's where the player ends up?

Yeah that "LITTLE BOOKEEPER" aka Jamie Pollard wasnt kidding when he said that the Jamie & Greg show was until "RETIREMENT TOGETHER"!!!

I gotta say boys that this is funny, the little bookeeper hires the guy he really wants after he fires a guy who can recruit, but that the little bookeeper hates...

Can you guys say....SWEETHEART DEAL??

I told you that the Jamie & Greg show was here to stay and now we have proof of it from of all places the freaking LOCUST STREET LIAR!!!

This bit of information DID NOT MAKE MY DAY!!!

Oh how people forget that Mac had all the leverage when we hired him. Kansas State had offered him a deal the same day. Mac was looking out for his own *** knowing he was coming into a rock bottom situation. The fact that the years were specifically tied in to things that were going to happen as a result of the crap that went on BEFORE he got here was genius in my opinoin. It's a business folks.

Call me apologist, call me a realist...To me, this just further points out how bad this job was when he took it.

I still believe that McDermott is the right man to lead ISU into the future. He can obviously recruit, and that was the main question anyone had about him when he came here. We've had some really unfortunate turnover on our roster, but I think next year will be the first year of a new era in ISU basketball. Especially if Craig stays.

If you have a coach that is motivated by money then the program is already a loser. I would rather have a coach who is inspired and passionate because they love and respect the game.
