MEDIACOM THE WORST NATIONALLY

I was a Mediacom customer for years until we moved a year ago. Despite the fact that my neighbor literally 50 feet from my house had Mediacom, I couldn't get it because they hadn't connected to my street yet. So we went with Qwest/DirecTV instead and we're not looking back.

Mediacom's issue is far from just being service-oriented. My service experiences with Mediacom have never been that bad. But they have no innovation to speak of. DirecTV seems to be rolling out some new feature every month or two - like a new digital TV guide, apps to watch your DVR programming on any device, etc. - and Mediacom does nothing.

I can't see myself going back.

Exactly. DirecTV is way ahead on things like that. Mediacom's DVR service has a lot of little things that seem like easy fixes (much less space for saved shows, recordings stop before episodes are over, impossible to get the timing right when fast-forwarding shows) it just seems like they don't even care to try. At least DirecTV and some other companies seem like they are trying to keep up with the competition.

Mediacom has me cornered because I live in an apartment complex that does not allow satellite dishes to be installed on the property. So I don't have any other choices. The amount I am paying for cable and internet about makes me cry every month I see the bill.

I will give them props on their internet though, as they are easily the fastest and most reliable provider that I have used to this point. Just wish I wasn't forced into knowing this due to a monopoly-type situation..

Fact is, for most people, especially if you watch sports, it would just end up costing more. The cost per channel would go up if you bought them individually.

I wish they'd do away dedicated sports channels altogether and make all events pay-per-view. The ratio of actual sporting events to time spent talking about sporting events seems like 1/10; I'd rather just pay to watch a game without having to also finance a bunch of talking heads who make a living arguing about sports.

I hear pay per view sporting events are super cheap to watch...

For me, it'd certainly be cheaper to purchase a few pay-per-view games per month than it is to get a basic cable package containing 75 channels I will never watch.

My family made the switch to DirecTV a couple weeks ago. My last weekend at home was absolutely glorious. I'm going to be depressed when we let most of the packages expire after the 3-month free trial, though. I saw one episode of Game of Thrones on HBO, and I absolutely love it! I'll be sad to see it go.

So basic cable in Iowa City is $11. WTF. How is a larger area with supposedly more options paying over double that? Family cable is like 50 for not much. Their specials are like $40. You think this will actually do anything? Guess not.

You might want to double check that...if you face the south most places will only ban "permanent" or if you screw it in...but they can be fastened in other ways. This was what I was told when I lived in an apartment a few years ago. I think they had to let you as long as you weren't permanently affixing it.? May not be an option though and certainly a PITA

A 4 tuner Tivo Elite running a cable card on Mediacom > Directv. Tivo has all of the good dvr patents.

Yeah. definitely a PITA and I have asked the building manager several times about it. My building houses 12 apartments and his words were "The building owner doesn't want us to allow any satellite dishes because he thinks it affects the aesthetic value of the property, and if we allow one, others will follow and having 12 dishes attached to the side or in the lawn would make it look like the projects." Don't ask me how he thinks satellite dishes = projects. This was even after I specifically asked him about attaching it to the railing of the deck so I could just un-bolt it when I left.

I always wondered how it would be allowed too because basically I'm forced to go with Mediacom. If they knew this (maybe they do?) they could charge me whatever they want and I'd have to choose between paying it or going without. Isn't that the definition of a monopoly?

I just assumed that the building owner had the right to refuse the attachment of a satellite dish if it "affected the aesthetic value" but now I'm kind of curious if maybe there is a way around it or something.

People complain about Comcast nationally, but compared to Mediacom, they were like knights in shining armor. Comcast has great service, prices, and customer service compared to Mediacom.

Agreed. Comcast is significantly better than Mediacom. I still miss my DirecTV (had to give it up because my wife and I moved into a north-facing apartment), but those people who complain about Comcast have never had to deal with Mediacom.

I've had several friends whose contracts ran out, and their bill price doubled. When they called to see what they could do about it Mediacom basically said they wouldn't negotiate with them at all or offer them a new deal and that they would have to pay the doubled cost. So needless to say the friends mentioned went with Century Link/DirecTV.

You should be able to load your dvr with all of last years episodes and this years with the on demand feature. Then just dvr the rest of this year.
