Where is Memphis getting this kind of money...?

I know $MU has Dallas oil bajillionaires behind 'em.

But... Memphis outside of FedEx? Isn't Fred Smith dead?
Memphis invented the Monopoly board game, thus they are literally printing money . . . . . :jimlad:

So it is (mostly) FedEx and the net new dollars would be far less than $250 MM?

Isn't Memphis offering to forgo any TV money during its probationary period, though?

Where is the AD going to get the money to operate in the meantime?

Or is the TV check from the American so small they'll hardly even miss it?
Solution: due to past bad behavior, the Memphis probationary period is extended to 50 years.

The problem with Houston is they bring almost no value in anything but Basketball, and with that basketball value is extremely limited in the overall picture. Houston in my opinion was a bad addition. They are all but nobodies in the state of Texas, and not really any better in the rest of the country. When people think of Texas Colleges and sports, Houston is not even close to being one of the schools people think of. I could argue they arent even in the first 10 Texas schools thought of.

I get we all hate Utah, but they were a much more valuable add, at least at this point, than Cinci, Houston, UCF.
My order of the value of the additions:
  1. Arizona St
  2. BYU
  3. Arizona
  4. Utah
  5. Colorado
  6. UCF
  7. Cinci

8. Houston

The Top 5 are all very close, and all could be swapped around a bit. Then 6-7 are probably close. Houston is far far behind.

Although additions came in separate phases, my rank is:
1 BYU
2-5 Pac-12 leftovers
6-7 Cincinnati/Houston
8 UCF

I think what c willy and other pushing for his add are missing is hours itbcheapens the brand of the b12. The only non "invite only" league. You can buy your way in. It wouldnt play well

It’s common sense it won’t be instant. Of course with all the P4/5 schools in Texas, Houston won’t have a huge following. Their students are fans of a bigger school, much like Drake/UNI students are fans of Iowa State/Iowa among others. Being on a bigger stage, and winning games tends to gain support.
UH had tepid interest and TV ratings in the SWC when they were good in FB. It isn't changing now as B12 members if they somehow become FB contenders.

Even in MBB, their following (or lack thereof) was displayed this past spring at the Final Four in San Antonio which is 3 hours away from UH. They had a good turnout of fans but it certainly wasn't overwhelming as it would have been with most state flagship universities (which UH isn’t ) that are 3 hours away.

Agree.

They also provided zero consideration to what's currently going on in the ACC and the potential for the B12 to add schools from that conference at the end of the decade that would provide far more value than Memphis.

And they gave zero consideration to cutting back to 8 conference games with 17 teams and then they suggested Boise St as an 18th to fix that issue but they obviously couldn't afford the buy-in.

Stupid side argument from me, would be, is Boise that much more of a 18th add than UConn?

It may not work but I give Memphis credit for doing this rather than sitting back and watching the game of musical chairs.

It’s a strong offer to the B12 with little draw back if it doesn’t work.
I agree. It's a really good offer but I still think it's a no. Crazy where things have gotten to.

I honestly think Memphis would have a better chance if half the big12 hadn't had to travel to the autozone liberty bowl....
I thought the Liberty Bowl was fine in terms of the bowl game and stadium. It was a blast in 2017 when I was there. Only downers of that experience were that it was super cold and the basketball team got shellacked by KSU after. ISU took over the town and Beale Street was great. That Fed Ex plane flyover was impressive.
