Years ago Valley West had a bar. My parents would always go to VW and my mom did as much shopping as she wanted because my dad would be in the bar.

It was called Valley West Pub and it was always open on holidays, making it a default location for some of us.

Good, their food is terrible and the concept of the beer tour is dumb in my opinion. Here, as a gratitude of our appreciation for you spending $600 on beer here we put your name on the wall with hundreds of other suckers.

The mini-tours are better, generally.

But really when i go there i just go there because theyre putting new beers on pretty regularly. That and its close to where i live. But its overpriced without the specials\rewards they have.

Penney's had a terrible holiday season. Between that and lack of management direction, they could soon be closing up shop. Based on this article, the fall could happen faster than the slow death that Sears is experiencing.

Sears isn't even putting up a fight. The Sears in Omaha at Crossroads was half empty last time I went in. The group that owns them doesn't care about the retail business, it's all about the substantial assets. They own most of their stores and adjoining properties and will be sold off whenever someone is willing to pay for the land.

I don't disagree. I just meant that it seems like Sears has been on the verge of bankruptcy for a very long time and they keep selling off just enough assets to stay alive. If Penney's falls, they will probably fall hard.

You definitely get more than just your name on the wall. You get $5 back for every $85 you spend, and $65 worth of OC bucks during each tour you complete. Given its not that much, but you get about 10% of what you spend back in rewards, plus other prizes for mini tours.

It’s closing because the service there was absolutely terrible the place was horribly managed.
This. I went there pretty consistently for a couple of years. Then they changed the late night specials and got new management and it was never the same after that. The quality of the food went downhill so fast and the service was subpar. I stopped going because of it.

Though their top-line price is fairly overpriced, so getting those discounts just brings things back to a more reasonable price.

Stopped going to the Ankeny one when they got rid of the lunch buffet. Never understood why they dumped the only thing people came there for during the day. I used to love OC. Haven't been in one in over a year.

We used to go to lunch at the OC in Ankeny, and would get the smorgasbord. Usually was pretty busy. Last time we went, no more smorgasbord and there were three sets of customers. I said to my boss that the place would be closed in six months. That was two months ago, so I don't know how they're doing.

As someone as works at one they killed it because basically when you factor it the amount spent putting the food out vs what we got in sales it wasn't much profit.

Most their beers are $4-$5 a pint. That's pretty normal compared to most places. Id agree their food is overpriced, but I rarely eat there.

As a customer I would have gladly paid a couple bucks more. Would have still been a deal. Wish they would have just raised price instead of killing it.

My wardrobe consists of various old Chicago hoodies.

Online shopping is only part of the equation. Mall owners and a lot of anchor stores took on massive amounts of debt when interest was cheap. Unfortunately this was also at a time when consumer trends shifted to more online shopping. The loss of instore sales contributed but poor financial management is a huge factor too.

I've heard this repeated and hope it is true since I am bringing it up again.

Jordan Creek Mall was the last enclosed traditional mall built in the US.

This should say enough about the long term viability of enclosed malls. Malls must thoroughly reinvent themselves to survive into the future.

If anyone still goes to Merle Hay for some reason and wants good food, go to Vietnam Cafe in the food court. The lady that owns it is really nice and the food is delicious. Also, once a month she has a buffet and it's really popular. I'm guessing she gets as much business as the rest of the food court combined.

Interestingly, the entire food court is all local restaurants I believe. No chains.
