ISU is dead last in scoring defense in the Big 12. Giving up nearly 40 per game. ISU offense 8th.

Look at last night. Once again the offense started off terrible. Once the the offense started sustaining drives in the third quarter the D played pretty well. Also, hard to lose two NFL caliber LBs.

Go watch the game again. It was a game of attrition. WVU had guys dropping left and right from injuries and we simply outlasted them, much like what happened with our inexperience early in the season. Our plays late worked primarily because we were playing their backups; not because we had any miraculous epiphanies. I'm happy for the win, and proud of our guys for not giving up.

No hard feelings, just don't have time to let him figure out what he's doing.

Rhoads needs a splash hire.

I'm not one of those that likes to celebrate someone losing their job, so I'm not going to be amongst those jumping up and down shouting for joy that Mess is gone.

That being said, Mess had to go. It simply had to be done. He was neither developing QBs or leading the offense in any kind of way that made any kind of sense.

Just hope that CPR hires a great offensive mind that is on par with Wally Burnham. Yeah, statistically ISU was dead last in defense in the Big 12. First, that had a lot to do with how bad the offense was, second, the guy lost guys to the NFL last year. Everybody knew it was going to be a rebuilding job on the D side of the ball this year, and in stretches the D actually looked really good.

Re: Messingham, Pope fired

Mess and Pope both represented the program and university well. Wish them luck. Think Rhoads made the right decision.

So, what other teams have already fired head coaches or OCs? It seems that Rhoads really got out ahead of the market.

Our OC position is a good career stepping stone. It shouldn't be hard to have better results next year (not a slam on Messingham, but a recognition of the fact that all QBs will have more experience, two new hotshot WRs, and the O-line will be more healthy). Rhoads tends to get good national press which will only help guys get attention for their next opportunity. There are only 10 OCs in the Big 12, so that alone will give you some spotlight.

The bend-don't-break defense and the 3-and-out offense isn't exactly a match made in heaven. I think the experience our young guys on defense got this year, along with the adversity they overcame will pay dividends next year.

Add to what Cyske(or whatever) said that you play in a conference known shamelessly for high scoring/fast offenses. I think it would be an offensive coordinator's dream job. You cant afford to be "vanilla" here. Here are the keys coach. Get creative, think outside the box, play fast, and for every game you score 40+ you get $100k bonus:)

Oh come on. You seriously believe that? Heck, half the time I thought some of the WV players were taking dives so they could stop our momentum. I'm not saying we had any sort of epiphany but 3 straight 3 and outs followed by two turnovers, is not easy on a defense.

Mess needed to go but you do have to see the humor in us firing our OC after the offense scored 86 points the past two weeks. It's just a funny (or sad?) coincidence.

Wow...I was hoping Mess was gone, but didn't think it was gonna happen, especially the day after a crazy win and 38 pts in regulation. Well played, CPR. Well played.

Not sure why everyone on Bliel. I didn't think he was great with the O line in previous years, but hard to argue that the TE didn't get better this year. Did anyone see what a stud Bibbs was the second half? I am fine with him coaching TE's.

Agree. I'm glad Bleil is still on the staff.

Ya what Bleil has done with the TE position is amazing, not just Bibbs.

If West Virginia had beaten us they would have outlasted us. You don't "outlast" a team that is beating you by 17 in the fourth. You go and you take the win. That's what our guys did on Saturday. They fought back and took the win.

Agreed. The one thing here (and I love CPR as our HC) was that while Mess was definitely over his head as an OC, it was CPR who decided to promote him to OC without any Div I experience. This decision should have never been made at ISU (this is the Big 12 not Division III) and quite honestly, CPR should have recognized LAST year, in 2012, that Mess was in way over his head. I am not suggesting at all that we ever get rid of CPR, I'm just saying that CPR set his own program back 1-3 years with this decision to promote Mess without any real experience.

Who knows, with an experienced OC, I think we win 1-2 more games in 2012 and maybe 1-2 more this year. I truly believe the Texas game was lost by our Offensive staff on the 2nd and short, 8 yard line, 4th quarter, with horrible play calling and not having Woody in the game (even as a decoy for Wimberly). The TCU game was winnable with better offensive coaching. Look at Auburn and tell me a new OC cannot make a world of difference from one year to the next.

absolutely.

We had more character than WVU... their players saw it and started folding to the pressure we kept on them.
