Wow, the two best kickers in the state on schollie. Should result in a lot more points and better field position on kick offs.

We now have the core to build a program. All we need now is to recruit a few linemen, linebackers, safeties, corners and receivers to really "kick" some arse.

I'm pretty stoked about this guys. I think we can safely say that last second victory repeats (similar to the '07 EIU game) are a whole lot more likely now with these two guys versus relying on walk-ons, etc.

Competition will be great for these guys. Anybody know, since Guyer's listed as a combo punter/kicker and Mahoney's strength is field goals, does that set-up Guyer to be groomed more for punting duties?

I'm completely excited about this one. Two quality kickers in this class. Probably see a gain of at least 40 yards a game in field position and 6 points a game over previous kickers. Huge difference!!!

the website I posted, former Clone Jamie Kohl said that Mahoney started punting this last year. Maybe thats an added bonus to getting him as well.

Hate to put a downside to a commitment. But I think that Chizik decided to put 2 kickers on schollie in this class because we lost a couple commits at other positions so he figured he just as well use 2 schollies on kickers rather than take a project or fallback recruit at another position. I like the strategy. But find it doubtful that we would have used 2 schollies on kickers if we had some big time recruits left to snap up our remaining scholarships. Hate to rain on the parade.

I disagree. We still have 6 scholarships remaining but he knows how bad the kicking game is so he got 2 kickers because competition just makes somebody better. Also, one of them might not pan out so by having 2 he has a backup plan.

Could be right. It almost seems like Mahoney is the better of the two on paper. 4-5 in competitions won. Mahoney kicks off a 1" tee on kickoffs. Doesn't hurt to have two guys who can kick. Shaggy won the Iowa game with a big kick, but he sure missed a couple big ones in big games. Of course, I place some of the blame on Mac for not getting him in position in the middle of the field on those kicks, especially against Mizzou.

I go to school with Grant and he might be one of the worst kickers I've ever seen. Sorry. Not a great pick-up.

He could barely make his XP's this year.

A lady I work with, her kid played with Mahoney and she says he is not too good. She went to Linn Marr games and he missed more than he made. He is good at the camps but bad under pressure of a game. Great, another Shaggy.

From Jamie Kohl:

"Grant is one of the best overall kickers at the high school level. Grant has proven this to me at numerous camps including the Elite Camp against 20 D1 college starters that he has the leg and the mental toughness to be special. Grant stepped up in front of 500 people at the Scholarship Camp and went 3 for 3 from 50 yards out to win the FG contest. He made 82% of his kicks over the 3 days of charting. Grant used to kickoff 4.3 seconds on kickoffs. I recommended that he switch to the 1" tee and he is consistently kicking off 70-75 yards with 3.9-4.0 hang time using new balls. "

Forgive me, but this guys opinion is enough to make me hopeful.

I'm not even going to read it. From the first sentence, I can clearly tell that this was written without watching his senior campaign.

Obviously his senior campaign was good enough to earn a scholarship to a big 12 school. Maybe, just maybe, the professionals know something you don't.

The commit is still warm and it's already he's a "worst kicker ever seen" and "not a great pick-up".

For how long now, we've had crappy options at kicker - a lot because we haven't put anything into the position. We recruit a guy that supposed to be pretty good, worth a scholly - and he stinks.

I love the internets.

I can't imagine we didn't withdraw our scholarship like every other school. Look at the offers he has left yesterday it was us, Colorado, Kansas, and other schools that I don't remember. Now it's FIU, Montanna State and Middle Tennessee State...

I went to every football game this year home and away and along with him leading our team to yet another 0-9 season. His kicking performance was wayyyyyy sub-par.
