I have an interview with Monsanto for a Field Research Assistant next week. I just graduated in December and this is my first real interview.

Do you guys have any tips or any first hand experience with Monsanto?

Thanks in advance.

Spell their name correctly, for sure...

:pwink:

Beat me to it :)... I'm drunk and I even caught that one.

regardless. Couple things. Take something to take notes with while you're there, make sure you do research on their position and the company so you can talk intelligently on it (and possibly have a couple good questions to ask them). Take down the names and contact info of the people that you talk to and write them thank you's the next day (just a quick 3-4 sentence email). Above all, be personable with them. They aren't going to want to hire someone that they will hate going to work with. I could go on but that's a start... Good luck!

1- Be yourself
2- Come prepared. Give specific examples of your accomplishments.
3- Do as much research as possible on them and the area you would be working in. Ask lots of questions surrounding this area.
4- If you are interested in the job. Ask to move forward in the next step. If you don't ask why should they call you back?

It's a first interview and probably with HR IDK. Be prepared to talk about your strengths and weaknesses (dumb I know) but they will ask. Don't tell them you don't have any weaknesses, you aren't JC. I'm in sales and know nothing about Monsanto but thought I'd offer up.

All of this (including I'm drunk). Know something about the company and position. Have a good reason for why you want to work there, not just "I need a job" even if you just need a job. I've been interviewing people for weeks for an open position, and finally today I had two candidates who had at least done their homework on the company. Still haven't had anyone ask for a business card, which I assume they would need if they wanted to send a thank you note.

What is this job for? the primary responsibilites? you graduated with a degree in what?

seems like people usually apply for research associate jobs if they have a BS.

Ha, reminds of how much I hate going to career fairs and having someone come up to your booth and the first thing that comes out of their mouth is; "I need a job."

Whats with the hunting / outdoors and tractors??? Reason I ask is I got a internship and communicated back and forth with my supervisor for dropping a deer hunting reference during an interview, we probably talked 15 minutes solely on deer hunting my family's farm ground , very cool guy. Where at outside of Iowa? Im curious.

I would throw in some comments about how much you think DuPont Pioneer sucks. Always good to disparage the competition.

I work with both companies, and it's not uncommon for someone to have worked for one before the other. It's the CEOs of the two companies that aren't fond of one another - or at least trying to figure out how to sue each other for the biggest payouts. Those down the totem poll know one another and get along.

Are you interviewing at the Huxley site, or another research station?

Be be prepared to put in long hours during the growing season, possibly travel out of country for winter nursery work, and generally work as part of a team. Communication skills (verbal and written), cooperative nature, agronomic knowledge, and working efficiently and smart would be traits I see in the research folks I work with at Monsanto.

When I interview people I like it when they come with questions. For example they ask me what I'm looking for in a candidate and then can tell me why they fit the bill. And if a candidate has done no research on my company/the position, my first impression is that they're lazy. And then I hear the Gong Show gong in my head and it's curtains for the interview.
