Thought it would be best to group all threads regarding expansion into one....there have been quite a few lately. So, until any new news breaks (I.E. a team actually announces it is moving from one conference to another), all speculation can be kept here.

This was posted over on Hawkeyenation, and I thought it was interesting, though it could be hogwash:

I just had a few beers tonight with a friend who works for the Big Ten here in Chicago. According to him, the Big Ten has focused their efforts on and is getting hot with three schools: Notre Dame, Texas, and Nebraska.

A few things stood out about what he told me. First, contrary to my understanding of the benefits of expansion, the Big Ten is NOT pursuing a playoff system in football. Instead of a playoff, the football teams would all be required to add an additional one or two out of conference game, which would push the regular season back one week or two. The Big Ten wants to maintain the end of season rivalry games at the end of the football season as opposed to adding a playoff.

Second, the Big Ten, Texas and Notre Dame are discussing a special rule to accommodate both of those schools. Instead of playing 8 games, both Texas and ND would play 7 to enable each school to play 6 out of conference games. That's apparently the caveat that brought both to the table, and Texas and ND also want to play each other every year. The tradeoff is that an 8-0 Big Ten team would always trump a 7-0 ND/Texas as conference champion, which is a potential logistical sticking point for the Big Ten and these teams. But apparently ND and Texas value the extra OOC game more than the conference championship potential, and ND and Texas want to play each other every year making the tie between two 7-0 teams impossible. They're also looking at potentially giving a automatic BCS slot for a 7-0 ND/Texas Big Ten team that loses the conference championship to an 8-0 team as a carrot, where the 8-0 team could still get the at-large but isn't guaranteed.

Finally, the Big East is essentially pushing ND to discussions with the Big Ten. The Big East has presented an ultimatum to ND to play football or get out of the conference for the other sports in order to protect the integrity of the remainder of the conference. Apparently discussions have taken place between the Big Ten and the Big East, and the current understanding is that the Big Ten will not accept any other Big East schools if ND joins the Big Ten. ND also will retain a national schedule, particularly with Texas joining, where it would have the ability to schedule 6 OOC games plus one game with Texas. This means they're picking up only three additional games with Big Ten schools while playing in the conference.

Very cool to hear the details from the inside tonight.

Just thought I'd share.

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL CONFERENCE EXPANSION THREAD****

Why the hell would the Big 10 want Texas and ND to come over and become the bosses?
They may well want Texas and ND to come over. But the likes of Ohio State and Michigan are not going to bend over backwards while Texas and ND boss the rest of the conference around.

I stated explicitly in my initial title that once ACTUAL news broke, a new thread would be warranted, until then, I pretty much stated, all rumors/discussion could stay in this thread....I guess you'd rather see 75 different threads about this every day. :skeptical:

You could have put this nonsense in with the nonsense in any of the 75 other threads. It would have fit right in.

Agreed.

I put chances of Texas going to the big 10 at almost nothing. They've got it made right now being in the drivers seat of the big 12, and with a huge chance at the title game every year. Add that to the fact that they'd have to pay a lot more for every single nonrevenue sport to fly to every single away game (conferences arent just about football), and i just dont think its gonna happen.

so dump this in one of the other threads. pretty dumb to come in with yet another rumor thread and declare it the OFFICIAL thread, when there have been dozens of other ones. Especially for a hawk fan to do that on a cyclone board, lol

I don't buy it but he OP sounds just about screwed up enough to believe it to be something the Big Televen would consider.

It's going to be tough on the Hogeyes. They get so excited when they don't have to play the good teams in their conference. It will be a lot harder to hide if they brought in some even better programs.

C'mon guys. Give the guy a break. He put 8 asterisks in the title. What more does a guy have to do to get attention around here?

If Texas and Nebraska leave the Big 12, it will be MUCH harder on ISU than it will be on Iowa. Without any doubt, ISU ends up in the MAC/MWC if Texas and Nebraska (on top of Colorado) leave the Big 12. Oklahoma/OK. St. will end up in the SEC and the remaining Big 12 teams will be hung out to dry.

They should make a conference that consist of 52 BCS schools

Its going to consist of every BCS school except the Big10 conference.

It will be called the My wiener is bigger than your wiener conference or MWIBTYW 52

They will sign a 10 year 15 billion deal giving each school about 29 million per year.

Careful now. Hawkfan is going to believe this, and run over to the Hawk board and post this "new development". Jimlad helps, a bit.

The OP's scenario is as likely as Ohio State and USC joining the Big 12.
