I want to know so very badly who our DC is going to be. The longer it takes makes me think the guy from Toledo, but that would be too late IMO for recruiting the early period.

So people want Campell to pass on good coaches because he's worked with them, and would rather hire unknowns/guys he might not mesh with or share similar philosophies with? Are you dumb?

As for our Texas recruiting not being as good lately, what do you expect when TCU joins the Big12 and aTm jumps to the SEC opening the Texas pipeline to 13 more schools on top of that. Not to mention technology these days and schools not even in the conference can do a little scouting from their computer.

Not every coach can go recruit, so being one person short for a few weeks is irrelevant.

And I am not a fan of your ability to reason.
Chizik was bringing his buddies. This is bringing your staff. BIG difference. In Year 1 I would take a staff that has worked together over the learning needed by a group of guys that are new.

...not to mention that when Toledo beat ISU, it would indicate that things were working just fine there.

The idea that what works at a smaller school isn't going to work at ISU feels like there's some sort of tradition/history being disrupted at ISU or something, when this is a very good time to bring in some tradition and history with an intact staff.

Its not decided yet. They met today and discussed it. Sturdy and Ayeni worked well in their time together. Sturdy has P5 experience, B12 experience, and connections in Iowa. He knows the roster and the competition. He has very little ego. Plus he is a sage veteran for these young and hungry coaches. Just my guess that he stays on as a WR coach.

Plus 4 recruits have said they will come here if he is retained.

I hope you're right. Sturdy did ok as playcaller, and as position coach. I'd like a few guys outside of the guys from coach's last gig, if they fit with CMC's guys. Any word on d coordinator?

Campbell's DC is the Interim Head Coach at Toledo. Someone has to get them through their bowl game! I would think if the DC has a shot at the Head Coach position, he will wait to see how that turns out. If not, my guess would be that person would join the crew later. However, I did read a post somewhere (no accuracy guaranteed and not my knowledge or opinion) that of all the assistants, the DC might be the one assistant that MC wasn't as close to as his other assistants. I have no idea if that is true, but it was posted somewhere.

I was wondering if Lou would have an opinion on any coaches to keep.

The staff is going to be young. The oldest guy announced today graduated college in 2001. I think the youth of the staff has a lot of positives, but having someone around that is a bit older and more seasoned would be a good thing too. And I did like what Sturdy did this year when he got the OC job.

I trust Matt Campbell to hire the guys he thinks will be best, but I would gain some respect for him if he decided to keep Sturdy around.

I do think there is some downside, but not due to this "buddy" fear. There is no doubt that getting assistants with proven Texas (and FL and Jucos) recruiting and familiarity/expertise with Big 12 teams is a benefit that we may not be getting.

Diminish TX if you want but we have gotten some guys from there.

I'm not trying to diminish TX. In fact, for quite some time, I've been advocating just the opposite. Typically, maximizing the time and effort recruiting TX requires a recruiter with strong ties to the TX high school coaches. The HS coaches are very influential in the decision that the recruits make. There are lots of HS FB players in TX. It's fairly straightforward to get players. The challenge is to get players that can make an impact in Big 12 FB.

1. It hasn't just been "lately".
2. The SEC has been recruiting TX for years.
3. Patterson was getting great athletes from TX long before TCU joined the Big 12. I will agree that joining the Big 12 has likely helped Patterson, but it wasn't a step improvement.
4. If you want to make excuses, use this one...Briles taking over at BU. During the 5-10 years prior to his arrival there, BU wasn't getting many more impact players out of TX than ISU was. That has certainly changed.

Just a guess, but I anticipate we hear who the DC is late Saturday or Sunday. My gut says it will not be the Toledo guy, because he could easily have been named already with the others.

Baylor's improvement probably didn't affect ISU's situation much, since the players Briles' staff has recruited are among the top players in Texas and we rarely landed those type of players, as others have said. Baylor and TCU's improvement does seem to have had an effect on UT and, to a lesser extent, Texas Tech.

I'm pretty sure Wally wasn't announced until after February signing day when he came on board. If it's not a recruiting position at the start, I could see it being a long wait again unless he already has someone in mind and they just have other duties to do first.

This is true now, but Briles had a long successful history at the High School level, and has a great eye for talent and thinking outside the box i.e. Wes Welker. Art just plain understands football and inds players regardless of how they are ranked by anyone else.

It's tough to get kids out of Texas when the Coaching staffs there are filtering them towards in state programs.

Some of the best players ISU has had since the Big 12 formed, at their respective positions on the field, came from Texas. I can't believe we are going to argue that recruiting Texas isn't important.

Well now is the State of Texas in the Big XII footprint....Well HELLO Yes recruiting Texas is important but also getting players from the Midwest is also important and easier to recruit to Iowa State....

Here's a question...........Why cant we recruit both the Midwest and Texas......I believe CMC can do both and do it extremely well and oh btw don't judge his recruiting by this 1st class......Then Again be my guest.
