More "Under the Radar" Names

What needs emphasis is "developing players" through great coaching. This hasn't been talked about enough I feel. I hate to bring up the Hawks but every year they put a couple of linemen in the pro's and always have good line development. Nobody rates their recruiting terribly high so it has to be the coaching they get. Has anyone ever done a study of Pro draft picks and how many stars they rated out if HS? It might be enlightening to see how many 2 and 3-Star kids got great coaching to make the next level.

I think the emphasis on system should probably be more on Coaching. Some staffs have a talent for putting their players in a position to win. The system is less important than the development.

I really think the talent was there to win 7+ games this year. For whatever reason on Offense were were in denial over who the better gameday QB was.

You know, the more I look at the names here and in the Williams thread, the more convinced I become that Iowa State should have stuck with CPR for one more season. I just can't see any of these clowns being any better than CPR. I can't get too upset with Jamie for pulling the plug. But the numbers of teams looking for a good coach, makes me believe any coaches left over, will be of lesser value than CPR.

I'm beginning to feel the same way, and I was one of the biggest proponents of getting rid of Rhoads too.

I just feel like the names that are rising to the top of this search are guys that will be a total crapshoot. Guys that I'm no more confident in winning games next year for us than I am with Rhoads.

For example, I don't like in PJ Fleck's video in CW's article where he shows the graph in the beginning and it shows this big drop off in year one as they start the rebuilding process, according to him. I don't think we necessarily need to rebuild right now. We have some really good pieces in place. I don't want to waste Lanning, Lazard, Warren, Peavy, etc's last few years while we "rebuild".

I don't think we need any drastic changes. In fact, I think we all agreed that this team was headed in a better direction after Mangino was gone and Lanning took over and we concentrated on running more. I was hoping we could get someone that could just keep this train moving in the right direction and build on it, versus tearing it down and starting over.

I sure hope we don't regret firing Rhoads in a few years. I'm just not real excited about any of the names right now. Not sure any of them can recruit in the Big 12 like you need to, or assemble a really good staff. All these MAC guys, and Fritz, and Leipold, and Stitt, etc.... have Greg McDermott written all over them IMO. Really good coaches for the level they are in, but if they move up to the Big 12 they won't be able to recruit well enough and their strategies that worked in the MAC won't work very well in the big leagues.

That is my concern. Hope JP can find the right fit. But it's a big gamble.

I didn't take it from the Fleck interview that he would necessarily tear down a program before building it back up, that's just the way it worked out at WMU. Also I liked the fact that he didn't show he was defensive about negative press or high expectations, and in fact embraced it. I'm actually excited about quite a few of the candidates out there. I just don't see it as a gamble in making a change from 2 and 3 win seasons, possibly 4 if we pull off the upset today. I remember going into this season there was a lot of optimism with the better schedule, lots of retuning players, and new culture after getting rid of some bad apples. But we're getting about the same results with 2nd half collapses and losing games we are in a position to win. Not sure why we would expect much different next year with the same staff.
