These threads make me sad every year. I got violently ill on morels about 15 years ago and every since I can not eat them. I get sick every time. It sucks because I love the little buggers. I think I developed some sort of allergy or intolerance to them.

I'll still hunt them, but I just can't eat them.:realmad:

Morels starting to come up in southern Iowa, probably still pretty small in middle and northern Iowa.

Easiest way to determine if it's a false morel or not is to cut it open. If it's hollow on the inside it's good to eat, if it's solid don't eat it.

If and when these start appearing in substantial numbers, anyone know where I can purchase some? Like in a store, market, roadside stand, etc?

Those look like the poison false grey morels.

Not quite sure if you are serious or not, but those are perfectly good Morels. They don't get any more real looking than that. The false Morels definitely don't look like that. I don't know, maybe I've been doing this too long, but it's hard to mistake a real morel for a false one. As others have said on here, cut it open, if it's hollow, it's real.

They are coming up here in Northern Illinois as well, around Chicago. Most are tiny, under 1". Going back out tonight to see if they've gained any size. Weather isn't looking good though, dry all week. At least it's staying cool.

I've heard of several being found by Baxter and Cedar Rapids. Should be in full force down south by this weekend.
