Utah is just a tremendous team that has way more talent across the board. That is obvious.

My chief complaint is with the idiot that scheduled the game in the first place. Talk about what playing a Kent State would do for you versus this prior to the heart of the conference run. Whoever scheduled the game should be tarred and feathered.

Game was scheduled in 2001. Utah was coming off a 4 win season. They got good.

Ben Bruns mentioned this in the postgame. When we scheduled Utah, they were bad. They were a Kent State.
That changed in between, and they became a monster. The team we got wasn't what we scheduled for.
I'm just thankful that we don't have the rematch, because I don't need to see anymore of that.

We should have bought out of this game like our staff wanted to.

Agree we should have bought out of that game. I'm sure the staff knew just how good the Utah program has become, and a shellacking like that hurts our program, especially in front of all those recruits and a national tv audience.

Ya the future can really bite you in the arse. Who Knew. I like scheduling these kind of teams. Might it hurt us Bowl wise maybe but I hate seeing Sisters of the poor coming to town. I think Utah was a good schedule even though we got whooped.

To answer your question:

Another person watching Saturday's game from afar will be Bruce Van De Velde, Iowa State's athletic director in 2001, when the game was scheduled.

"At that time, Utah was not nearly the power that it is now," said Van De Velde, the athletic director at Louisiana Tech. "It was a quality program, but middle-of-the-road back then. They were a good opponent we thought we could compete with."
The Utes compiled a 4-7 record under coach Ron McBride in 2000. They became a national power after Meyer took over in 2003.

"It shows you how things can change," Van De Velde said. "I've seen Iowa State play on TV. They'll do fine. They'll be competitive."

The Utes became the talk of college football during the 2008 season that ended with a stunning 31-17 upset of fourth-ranked Alabama in the BCS Sugar Bowl.

At 13-0, Utah was college football's only unbeaten, yet finished No. 2 behind 13-1 Florida on the final Associated Press poll and fourth on the final USA Today coaches' poll.
"We've started to get more recognition after that game," said Schlauderaff, who started in the Sugar Bowl. "More people know what Utah football's all about."

Iowa schedules Ball State people. We get Utah. I know how the advanced scheduling works. I know Utah wasn't this good when scheduled. 9 years in advance is totally ridiculous btw, but some programs stand the test of time as crap teams. Anyone who would take a loss to Utah right now over a win against Akron is ridiculous. We need cupcakes, I hate to say it, but we cannot be scheduling tough non conf games until we start finishing in the top 3rd of the big 12...UNI is good to have on there and I know we got @UCONN next year which is not Utah, but no gimme. San Jose State should be welcomed along with Toledo, but no way should we not be doing 2-1's with those schools at the least. We're no powerhouse, but I really think our scheduling needs a longer, harder look in the future.

Wasn't Ball State a ranked team 3 years ago? They were not awesome, but they were a top 25-15 team if I remember. I remember Lettermen talking about them alot.

They were 12-2 (counting the bowl game) in 2008. Followed that up with a 2-10 season the next year.

Weren't there talks about dropping the series completely? But for whatever reason, the JT game was kept while the @Utah one next season was dropped?

Its already been confirmed that both teams will not play each other next year. Both teams were going to a 9 conference game season and mutually decided to not play again. The schedule on cyclones.com has been updated.

I fully expect a huge resurgence at San Jose St in the near future.

Agreed. In NCAA '11, my first year of head coach at San Jose State I finished 13-0, winning the WAC and beating Georgia Tech in the Fiesta Bowl. Went on to finish 33-7 as coach in three years there before moving to Hawai'i. Just saying, we need to watch out.
