Nervous about being picked to win...

I totally understand why some people are nervous or don't like that we are being picked to win by more people than usual. I have been around long enough to have witnessed my share of letdowns and heartache. But with every winning program there comes a time when you have to embrace a new era, an era where you are expected to win more games than you lose. Do you think Alabama fans get nervous when everyone picks them to win a game? No, of course they don't! Now I am not comparing us to Alabama in any way but our program and fans have to start believing that we are a program that should expect to win and we have to embrace it. Coach Rhoads always talks about changing the culture and you can definitely see that happening with ticket sales, attendance, etc.. but it also needs to start happening with our confidence as fans. We need to believe! I do, and I know the players do! Do you?

My fear is more for self-control. I've looked a couple times for a bus so I can hit somebody.

I'm not going to be afraid of enthusiasm from fans or a couple writers picking us to win. I expect that, because that's the program we want to be.

Everybody I've seen is picking us...

I live in Florida and the local radio guys who are usually big 10 homers picked us to win as well as most of the CF "experts". Tough crowd around here

My point was that we shouldn't be worried about being confident in our team. I understand our history but history gets rewritten everyday. It's our turn to start a new history for Iowa State Football. I am confident that we have the better team and I am not afraid to say it. Hopefully that will translate into a victory today.

I would expect most if not all the CF "experts" to pick us to win as they are big ISU supporters and former Cyclone players.

Normally people defer to Vegas when you're speaking generically about being picked to win (or not). (thus the confusion many had with the OP thread title).

Well said. I've felt that way for awhile now too, but I understand both sides to the argument. There were some (or many) who were glad we were the underdog against Tulsa, so the team would come out with extra motivation. There are some who are glad we're not ranked so teams may overlook us. Well if we're going to take the next step, we're going to have to learn to win without being the underdog, and without being overlooked.

One or two people on a couple shows picked ISU,but only if we did such and such, which I would have to agree with. There are some ESPNers and Big 12 Showcase,Big 12 replay, etc. that do like our defense though.

No way! I was totally unaware of that. Thanks for the info, now it all makes much more sense.

All kidding aside, I have seen plenty of people commenting on this board about how they are nervous about being picked to win. I was simply stating it's time to be more sure of ourselves and our program. Maybe I should have replied to those posts directly, and no I'm not going back through them all to quote them so you can see what I am referring to. They exist, I assure you.

Me too. I feel really confident that we are the better team and that there is no reason we can't walk out of Kinnick this afternoon with a "W". Which is why I'm terrified that they are going to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown and beat us 50-3.

My sentiments exactly. I'm afraid that this game could be really ugly for ISU especially after reading all the posts about how ISU is going to "beat down" Iowa. That kind of "Karma" can be the kiss of death.
