We bought a Bosch dishwasher 3 months ago. As others have said it is very quiet. You do not even know it is running.

We just bought an $800 Bosch, and we cannot hear it when is running. Even when we stand one foot away. Luckily it has a little LED that lights up a red dot on the floor when it's running.

I'm normally a value shopper but last time I sprung for a Bosch and I'm glad I did. So quiet I barely know it's running and does a helluva job on the dishes.
Agree with everyone who said Bosch. Went from a cheapie GE that sounded like a jet taking off to one of the quietest dishwashers out there. The red light is key, otherwise you never know it's running. I will say that loading it takes a little more skill, as the tines are a just close enough together to let our Fiestaware "talk" a little bit during the cycle. Also, the Bosch doesn't have a chopper in it, so don't leave big chunks on your dishes. It does have the option to raise or lower the middle rack (ours is a 3 rack model) to accommodate water bottles and whatnot, as well as tines that fold down flat for larger items (such as mixing bowls).
All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. Dishes get clean, the only thing you can hear is the water draining out, and most importantly, mama is happy.

They must have dishwashers down to a science now. Even some of the lowest rated ones in Consumer Reports are rated "excellent" in the cleaning category. It is the other bells and whistles that separate.
Top three brands for performance in general are Kitchenaid (Whirlpool's high-end line), Kenmore Elite (also made by Whirlpool) and Bosch. When you get to the main line brands (GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, etc.) you drop down to "very good" overall ratings but still pretty darn good.
Bosch and Whirlpool dominate reliability. LG and Samsung are worst in the reliability category.

Bosch is rated higher in Consumer Reports for performance but the Mieles are still great. Bosch is superior to Miele in reliability, however.

My dad worked for GE for a couple decades, In college I interned for Jenn Air under the Maytag umbrella.
The intershup led me to be a production manager for electrolux. That said, I will never own an electrolux product. I have GE and Bosch products in my own house.
We have s Bosch 50db SilencePlus and while it is very quiet, it does a terrible job getting the dishes clean. I pretty much have to hand wash them prior to loading them in the dishwasher. Maybe I just got a lemon.
If you are a veteran, Lowes offers 10% off all purchases with proof of discharge papers (DD-214). That is quite a deal when purchasing a 900.00 appliance.
also second this. we bought a spec home a few years ago and the cheap one we started with was noisy. Spend the money for something less obnoxious
