If I called my wife "Wifey-Poo" regularly, it wouldn't matter what kind of washer we had...the D is on its way.

This kind?

The oldies are still the goodies, There is a guy who restores and purchases lightly used washer and dryers down in Valley Junction in WDSM, he sells the steel bodied ones that are built like tanks and have the ceramic baskets, I believe most of them are top loaders. I got a washer and dryer set of Maytags, looked damn near new for 400. He gives a warranty of 6 months on parts and labor for them too. I don't spend alot of money on things that sit down in the laundry room next to the cat box and haven't had a problem with them yet.

Man....I wish I would have known this a few months ago. I was looking for something just like this.

Back to the original poster. I don't think you can get a high efficiency for $500. So for that price you are talking an old school one. Nothing wrong with that though.

I bought a Kenmore high efficiency machine for about $800 in October. It's huge....I'm not sure anyone would ever use all of that space. I really like it so far. Just a note on the price, I did end up getting $100 in rebates from Mid American, so the actual cost was $700.

I bought a High Efficiency Maytag on sale from Lowe's about a month ago for $400. After the rebate from my electric company it will have only cost me $300. It works well and I like it a lot.

There is a HE Maytag for sale at Lowe's right now for $539.

Love my Fischer-Paykel top loader. Very unflashy, never had an unbalanced load, and I think it was around $500-ish.

Have two Fischer-Paykel top loaders (Home and rental property). Very good on water usage. Zero maintenance in 6 years on each. Overall, very good. Was originally recommended because of the mold/mildew problems seen in many front loaders. By the way, the wife likes it....

Correction...the home washer is eight years old now. No maintenance.

The Europeans use front loading, so clearly top load is better. My in-laws hate their very expensive front load. Doesn't clean well, takes forever, and smells. I've used both and prefer top loads.

The Maytag Bravos X is HE, no middle agitator so you can fit in as much as a front-loader, and so on. It usually runs around $700, but you can get it on sales like the above-mentioned.

Due to the soaking needed on some very soiled items (such as if you have a job where your clothes need multiple rinse cycles, or if you do cloth diapering), top loaders can be a much better decision in those instances. I'm pretty comfortable with my level of technology knowledge :)wink:), and we made this decision about a month and a half ago and feel like it was a great choice.
