Numbers aren't retired, no? Just hung up? There's only 31 possible numbers.
Actually 37, but your point still stands.

0-5 = 6
10-15 = 6
20-25 = 6
30-35 = 6
40-45 = 6
50-55 = 6
and 00

That's 37.

I guess I should have read further. For some reason I thought I was at the end of the thread.

Years ago there were only half as many numbers available for high school BB in Iowa. A player would have one jersey with an even number on it (10 for example) and another jersey with the next odd number on it (11 in the same example). I think the even was home jerseys but I'm not totally sure. This meant that a ref could signal the foul with his hands and it was always clear which team it was on since there was only one player with any number on both teams combined. This also meant that there were only numbers for 18 players on a squad.

When did Iowa move away from the even/odd uniform thing? I haven't lived there in decades, I've been curious when they switched.

Also curious if other states still use that system. Michigan & Indiana don't do it and as far as I've gathered, never did.

I was 30 & 31 my final 3 years of varsity. 14 & 15 in junior high. In case anybody wondered. :D

I played in the very late 70s and early 80s and it wasn't a rule when I played. One of my first years we had some old hand-me-down uniforms that had different numbers for home and away and that is when I learned about the old rule. Those unis had belts, too.

Thanks for the info.

Ah, the belt era :) I think that trend had waned by the time I got to HS. I still got to experience the tight-tight shorts and knee-high socks period, though.:)

They still did even-odd in early 80s in our conference and pretty much all non-league teams we played, if I remember, but we were 1A size, so maybe larger schools had abandoned it much sooner, and I hadn't realized it.

I miss the Magic and Bird short shorts/extra long socks era.

There were really only 15 available, because the lowest jersey number given out was 10. Nobody had single digits back in the day.

Even = home
Odd = road

If you watch the 30 for 30 on Phi Slamma Jamma, you can see that Houston was using that format in the mid-80s. The white jerseys are even numbers, and the reds are odd. Olajuwon had 34 and 35.

This may be why:

My sophomore year we got to choose our numbers right after going out for BB. You had to go visit the coach to get your number. The smallest guy on our squad came to me and just about everyone else on the squad asking if he could switch numbers because he was late requesting and the only number left was 55. Keep in mind this was long before the Jason Kidd days and guards never wore big numbers. Eventually the coach relented and let him get 11, the same number as our best senior guard because they would literally never be playing together.

But the point is we had a squad member for every single number. I don't think they let us have 0 or 00, though. We did have the same uniforms for JV and varsity because you might play on either or both teams.

I grew up in Illinois in the 70's and don't remember anything like players having odd and even numbers.

I agree. Notice they have not dared trot another #31 out there, though.

I have always thought a drawn offensive foul should count as a steal.

Nixon played in 27 games his junior year.

He drew 55 offensive fouls.

He had 40 steals.

95 / 27 = 3.51 "extra" possessions generated for his team per game

Last man to wear the numbers above, if I remember correctly...

#0 -- Jordan Railey

#4 -- Donovan Jackson

#11 -- Monté Morris

#13 -- Jakolby Long (and before that was Bryce Dejean-Jones)

#22 -- drawing a blank here, maybe Bryan Petersen?

#22 Dedric Willoughby?!?!?!?!?!?

Heights/weights added for the newcomers...

- #13 Prentiss Nixon
- 6-1 / 180 86.38%

- #22 Tyrese Haliburton
- 6-5 / 160 91.54%

- #11 Talen Horton-Tucker
- 6-4 / 238 98.09%

- #0 Zion Griffin
- 6-6 / 205 93.88%

- #4 George Conditt IV
- 6-10 / 208 86.81%

Relative to their 247 profiles...

Haliburton is the same height but 10 pounds lighter.

THT is an inch shorter but 28 pounds (!!!) heavier.

Zion is three pounds lighter but the same height.

Conditt is the same height but eight pounds heavier.

Somebody saw Deonte Burton and was like (that, just like that)...

I'm surprised they have the updated heights/weights for the newcomers but haven't updated anything for the returning guys

They might have. I always used Sports Reference to track height and weight for players who have recorded stats, not the individual team rosters.

Not sure which is more likely to have biases in them.

So they might have changed it for returning players -- I just do not know what to compare it to relative to what they have for them right now.

They are the same as last year on the ISU website
