What about Brian Smith at Missouri? I don't think I've seen his name just curious of others opinion.

You're right. I don't think he's been mentioned and he should absolutely be included on the list of the most qualified. That said, Mizzou is his baby and he's built it into a perennial top 5 program with talent throughout the lineup. I know nothing about Mizzou's commitment to wrestling but they've helped/stayed out of the way enough for him to build the program from scratch his way.

The only question I would have is how he feels about the "political climate" around the university. He's definitely worth a phone call. I'd be thrilled with the hire but stunned if he's interested.

My feeling is comprising a "working group" of former alum is the way to go. I think we can all agree that JP is one of, if not the best AD we have had at ISU. With that said, I don't think collegiate wrestling is one of his strong suites. Reach out to former alum, get them together and have them come up with a short list for JP to interview.

I would reach out to Kelly Ward, Santana, Hummel, of course the Gibbons Brothers, Kreiger, Van Arsdale, Varner, Reader(I'm sure I'm missing somebody, feel free to interject) and of course Bobby. I'd even want KJ's input. Bobby can chair the committee. They can get together via social media or in person and come up with a list of 3-4 guys and present it to JP.

It's the only way to get it done. We have to make the correct hire.....

not to turn this into a Pollard beat down, but I do not agree with all the JP love. Let me point out a few issues

horrible, horrible coaching hire record Chizek, Mcdermott, Rhodes, Jackson, jury out on Prohm, and Campbell.
and Fred came to him twice- the second time he finally made a correct decision to hire.

the poor working relationships with Fred and Cael. He let his ego get in the way of both, and while i think Fred would have left anyway, JP sure as hell didn't help.

His overall ego, attitude does not make him the most popular person in town, especially with people that pay the bills. I mean what other AD goes on the coaches shows like he does ?

Many people praise his build up of facilities, and rightfully so. However, with the enormous amount of money that has been distributed to the big 12 in the last 5-10 years, how can you not make massive gains.

JP could not hold Gene Smith jock strap.

I agree Smith would be a choice pick, but I'm not sure what you mean by referring to the political climate? Do you mean the expectations of the fan base?

No. I was referring to the campus race protests, removal of the Chancellor etc in 2015-16. It's been awhile now and things may have settled down enough that it's a non issue (and it may never have been for Smith), but I have a friend that is a Mizzou alum that said that many in and around the university were very unhappy with how politicized the environment had become and the way much of it was handled.

I'm not making an argument or taking a side and have NO desire to make this political. I was simply pointing out one small possibility where Smith might be willing to talk.

Not exactly sure.
The more I think about this, using the lists that everyone bounces around. I would prefer desser or pops first. If a no with those then Bono. I want a HC, too much stuff that an assistant doesn't normally deal with makes them struggle for a year or two unless they have a stacked deck for a year or two. They usually bring staff with them or at least a partial staff. Assistants have to find other assistants somewhere. Some work, some don't, so you have that uphill struggle. All the assistant talk, even like Eddie G or so, I am not in favor of. Still waiting for all the Mark Perry guys to tell me why he would be great. I see a few big names he's been labeled as recruitied, but not really a load of them and don't see them as developing well at Illinois.

There is a short list of 3-4 I've seen from 2 donors and I know some high level discussions with at least 2 of them have occurred, but it's still obviously early.

Seriously? Donors have lists for Pollard? I would think that would make his job very difficult. And if donors are going to use their influence, I hope they actually know what they are talking about.

If one of those is who I think it is, and I'm pretty sure it is, he definitley knows what he is talking about.

Yeah I'm starting to lean that way myself unless Terry wants to jump ship and go head to head with his brother. If we can't land a top notch HC and have to settle for an established assistant from a solid program, so be it. My updated list looks like this.

Dresser
Pop
Flynn (Edinboro)
Cody Sanderson (not likely I know)
Casey Cunningham
Bono
Santoro (Lehigh)
Pritzlaff (Rutgers)
Guerrero (Okie State)

Sorry I don't have a link and don't intend to look for it. But Jamie somewhere said that the wrestling coach search before was the hardest thing he's done. I'd expect to reach out to people more knowledgeable on the topic.

The only person that can make JP look good is BVDV.
