NFL: NFL Offseason Thread

Heard an interesting rumor from a friend today. Not sure where he heard it, but he said that the Cowboys want Adrian Peterson bad and are considering giving up DeMarco Murray and 3 future first round picks. I have to think to myself that no team is dumb enough to give up that much for one player, even if it is the greatest RB in NFL history. I would hate to see Peterson go (especially to the lamest team of all time), but if I were the Vikings GM and got that offer, there is no way I turn it down. Murray is a great RB, and imagine what you could do with 3 first round draft picks!
Yeah there's no chance this happens but I'd be on board. I really hope AD comes back but you couldn't pass on an offer like that.

I can't see it. The Redskins gave up slightly more than that to move up in the draft to get RG III. Peterson's a future Hall of Famer, but he'll also be 30 years old at the start of next season with a lot of mileage. No way a running back nearing the end of his prime commands the same haul as a 22 year old potential franchise QB.

Were the first graders talking about it during recess? Because that's the only place anyone could buy that conversation being had.

Additionally, he's got these stipulations in his current contract.

Come on, dude. The specter of trouble is constantly looming around him. He's a hothead. The team knows it and have taken special actions to prevent him from getting in trouble. Perhaps nothing of significance will ever happen, but it's there. Now, he's got a load of talent, and is probably worth the hassle, but it doesn't change the fact that he is a headache.

You are really reaching here as none of these are a big deal and all are in the relatively distant past. Dez pretty much grew up in a ****/broken home, most people come out of that with scars and baggage. Dallas is being wise to help him manage it and keeping him out of trouble. Aka, a little today to protect the big investment down the road.

Headache? Laughable. Higher maintenance that a number of other players? Sure. But again, all this is proactive stuff and not reactive to him causing issues on/off the field.

Dez is a brilliant player and phenomenal teammate/competitor. Highly respected throughout the league.

People are obsessing over this Dez vs Demarco decision (and it's a big one) and pointing to Demarco's production this season as the reason to sign him. Not to be taken away from what he did, he was brilliant. But the MVP on the entire Dallas team was none other than the offensive line. Not a single position/unit comes close.

A lot of running backs could do very well in Dallas with the group they have up front. I hope it is Demarco...really do.

Smart money says Demarco is more replaceable than Dez and I don't think that is much of a discussion.

Personally I think Dallas finds a way to bring both of them back.

Haha. Somebody might want to inform Jerry that Peterson is 30 years old.

Apparently Seattle has no cap.

Multiple internet sites, have Suh going to Seattle, Bryant, keeping Lynch and Wilson.

Brady has to cut his salary in half just to sign another player from the practice squad.

Lol. If this is the case I expect the Packers to resign Bulaga, Cobb, and Williams while extending Lacy and Mathews for 3 years this off season.

From what I've been reading it sounds like they're going to try to franchise Bryant and sign Murray to a long term deal, but take that with a grain of salt. It's all just speculation right now. Your comments about the o-line are accurate, and it also brings up the issue of what they plan on doing with the right tackle spot where Doug Free and his backup are both set to hit free agency. The backup is younger, probably cheaper, and played pretty well in Free's absence. My guess is they let Free go.

I've hated on Free a lot and rightfully so. But this season he was pretty damn good and it was a very noticeable change when Parnell came in. I am not sure I agree with Parnell "played pretty well". He didn't play bad, but again, it was a noticeable change in the running game when Free was out. A couple of those games tho, Dallas was missing Martin.

I would not be against Free moving on as he will be "expensive" and I'd hope Parnell can improve in the offseason.

Another option would be to go o-line in the draft again. That would put what, three fifths of their line on relatively inexpensive rookie deals?

The Cowboys are reportedly reluctant to give Bryant guaranteed money comparable to other elite wide receivers because of off-field concerns.

I'm not making this stuff up. Now, as I've said, that doesn't mean that he's not worth signing, but there is more risk that comes along with Dez than there is with other top tier receivers, to the tune that the contracts he's being offered are lower because of it.

Randall Cobb reportedly wants 9 million a year to resign with the Packers

Is this high or low for him? I don't normally follow NFL free agency so I can't really put this in context.

I think it's a lot for a guy who has never had to be the #1 receiver before. 9 mil per year would make him one of the ten highest paid players at the position league wide. I like his game breaking ability but for 9 mil per year he better be more than just a guy who's good getting the ball in space.

But that's the nature of free agency. Guys tend to get overpaid. Some team has a need at a position and they give elite money to non elite players. That's how you end up with fiascos like the Mike Wallace deal in Miami and Greg Jennings in Minnesota. Both good players but both wildly overpaid.

I'm not sure if my Packers should sign Cobb at 9 million per year or not? I'd hate to see him go, but the Packers have shown over the years that it's usually better to let guys walk that are asking for too much money, and just build through the draft.

I was concerned when the Packers lost Greg Jennings and James Jones, but look at them now with Randall Cobb and Davonte Adams.... they are better than they were with Jennings and Jones IMO. The Packers have shown the ability to let high priced free agents walk and replace them with younger, hungrier guys.

I think Cobb is definitely worth 9 million if he can continue to produce at the level he did this last year. Though it's hard to say how much of that is attributable to Rodgers being really damn good.

I'm way out of the loop on these things but I assume Wilson is still riding his tiddly winks 3rd round draft pick contract? That's probably helps immensely
