It’s really too bad we couldn’t have had more spring recruiting success.[/QUOTE]

That was kind of surprising to me. There were several transfers that would have fit nicely with ISU that went to some less successful programs with less immediate needs. Maybe the fact that ISU had so much to replace made them afraid to come here.

This year will be whatever it is. Nice to see Prohm get some highly touted HS kids coming in to build a foundation for the program.

The only one that still sticks in the gut for me is Juiston. I might be over hyping him, but he would have made this team much more complete.

Juiston is averaging 15 & 12 + 3 assists. That's a strong stat line. If you land him, he's starting at the 4 instead of Beverly and you truly have 5 B12 athletes starting plus Lard, Brase (maybe he doesn't come here), Lewis and Long.

Agree. He’s the type that adds possessions and points without taking away opportunities from others. Unfortunately he decided relatively late too, so contingencies like Davenport at Memphis were off the board. Our guards are performing very well now that we have NWB at point, but conference play is a battle of attrition and having McNeill as an option off the bench (not to mention future years) would have helped.

Oh well. It’s great Prohm has helped NWB play to his potential. He is the perfect guard to go with the more heralded guys in Wigginton and Jackson.

Juiston stings but none of the other transfers are having great years except for Egor Koulechov. Elijah Brown has really stepped up his game too. Mark Alstork has been bad and Daryl Edwards is hardly getting minutes.

I was super bummed when we lost Mcneill but I'm over it now. I think he's a pro and has as much upside as anyone on our team

I see NWB more like Lazard.

Both are legacies.

Both are relatively quiet, shy guys who ultimately lead by example.

Both "switched positions" but in softer ways than Lanning.

Nick from a wing/combo to a point guard, letting Wigginton and Jackson rack up the buckets, and Lazard almost to a wide blocker instead of a deep ball wide receiver with a QB like Park with a howitzer for an arm, allowing our horizontal screen game and David Montgomery to thrive with a QB with limited arm strength but good accuracy and decision-making.

Both still get theirs, though -- Nick scores and Lazard in the red zone.

Both went from budding stars to straws that stir the drink.

Nick Weiler-Babb has become the Joel Lanning of Iowa State basketball.
  • He agreed move to a new position and he has exceeded everyone's expectations at that position.
  • Like Lanning, he's become a stat sheet stuffer. Points, assists, rebounds.
  • He has made his team significantly better. Jackson and Wiggington in particular.
  • He has placed the team's welfare ahead of his own.
  • He's an amazing representative for Iowa State University. Very humble and hard working.

Not to mention he's just starting to learn the nuances of the position.

You could tell that just a bit vs. the trap/press the other night. He turned it over once and was odd to see it happen just like when MM would occasionally.

His height/length really help out in those situations too.

I really don't know how accurate the 'pro' talk is but you can definitely see a wide range of ability.

Don’t get me wrong, I love his game and that he is a Cyclone, but not really seeing the comparison. Points 1-3 are true. Not so sure about #4 as in if he has a path to the league, it is at the new position. Lanning went from the glamour position to the blue collar position. 5th point is likely true, but I haven’t heard him speak much.

For a while there I was almost expecting a triple double possibility every night. Eh, let's face it, I still am. :) His averages are amazing.
And when conference starts and the numbers drop, the same people going nuts about his current output will wonder what's wrong with him and probably throw him under the bus.

They might, but that's how people are, unfortunately.

This is true. I said it because as a point guard, he's giving up open shots to get the ball to other scorers on the team. Wiggington has said this to the press.

I’ve not seen UNI play but I would imagine we’ll have to guard the 3 point line better than we did against Iowa in order to win.

Jacobson’s team won’t give up as many easy baskets off of turnovers like Iowa did.

If they are anything like their teams in the past, they’ll be patient and stress the defense, pass, stress the defense, and so on, until you have a break down. It will really test one of our largest weaknesses.

I’m also guessing that their defense will be solid and force impatient jump shots (another weakness). It will be a very good benchmark for us.
