If they'd played again, I don't see ISU winning that year. It doesn't matter, because they were better when it counted. But I don't think that by the end of the year, ISU was better than Iowa. ISU's schedule was brutal, but in a couple of those games they weren't even remotely competitive. And then it hit rock bottom against UCONN and Boise.

Disagree with that. That iowa team had one major weakness...pass defense. They were exposed by the three teams on their schedule that could pass the ball if their run game got shut down: ISU, Miami OH and USC. ISU had a dynamic playmaker at QB and that offense matched up perfectly with iowa's weakness. That said, I think it is obvious that iowa had the better overall team that year. I would not argue that one at all. ISU just had a perfect matchup. If they played 10 times, I think that ISU would have won 7.

ISU's schedule that year wasn't that brutal, they just got exposed by OU as being one-dimensional.

There is simply no excuse for the Hawks losing today. They were outplayed, and out-coached. I'll have to wait and see how the season plays out before I could make an honest assessment of which team was better, but ISU was the better team today, and it wasn't even close.

Iowa's defense was completely unable to slow down Jantz. He made play after play, and while we had a few broken coverages (the TD in the North endzone and the one that got called back spring to mind), Jantz made far more pin-point passes. It wasn't just a few lucky breaks here and there.

ISU did all they could to GIVE this game away, and they still won. Turnovers, penalties. Didn't matter, Iowa wasn't able to take advantage of the Cyclone's mistakes. ISU manhandled Iowa in the trenches on BOTH sides of the ball (which shocked me, I figured the o-lines would dominate the game for both teams).

And how's about a little love for Money Reynolds, who truly was money today?

I said a couple weeks ago that I expected a competitive game, and that if ISU got a big play or two on special teams, I could easily see them winning it. Well, they had several good special teams plays.

I was losing it when we didn't go for a chance at a field goal at the end of the 4th quarter. I knew we wouldn't, but it still pi*sed me off. And it happened again after ISU offered us a window of opportunity on the offsides penalty to turn 4th and 6 into 4th and 1, yet we didn't go for it. You can't play not to lose, especially on the road, and ESPECIALLY when it's a rivalry game and the stadium is going as nuts as JTS was.

But that didn't cost us the game. Did it cost us a CHANCE to win the game? Sure. But the play of Steele Jantz and the rest of the Cyclones is what really lost this game for the Hawks.

why do you have to do this? come on here and be all complementary and honest? making sense with all your "logic." you are single handedly destroying my hawk stereotype. why can't you just be an illogical a$$hole?

The better team won today. - Page 4 - HawkeyeNation Forum

Wait a minute, am I missing something? The title of the thread is "The better team won today" and I went on defending that throughout the thread.

I wasn't making any excuses for Iowa at all, the opposite actually.

EDIT - Nevermind, I am assuming you are talking about the others in the thread arguing my points. Gotcha.

The hawk posters on here are much smarter than the ones on Facebook...

All I see on Facebook are things like:

"Nice super bowl win"
"Good luck in the MAC/WAC in five years"
"You will always be little brother"
"We gave this game away"

For this being OUR super bowl, the tavernhoks sure are taking the loss pretty tough :twitcy:

I'm glad I know people in real life who are sensible Hawk fans, and fans such as as yourself tm, who don't believe their team is infallible, and can actually get outplayed in this rivalry. +Rep for your analysis.

Anybody who claims this one is an idiot. Iowa had what, one fumble and Davis' dropped pass in OT that were miscues falling under the "giving it away" category?

Iowa State had three fumbles, two missed field goals, and so many penalties that they could have backed up into Hilton. The CYCLONES were the ones practically trying to give it away, and yet they still won.

I must say you are very gracious. I apprectiate that. And you are right, ISU did hit the bottom against UConn and Boise. But, as I mentioned before, they had what was arguably the toughest schedule in the nation. That wore them down. And then to add insult to injury they got to play Boise State in a bowl game in what was essentially a road game.

There was no "essentially" about that bowl. Played in Boise's stadium. That's just one more benefit to the Broncos getting national rep and being in the BCS race. Somebody else takes their spot in that bowl.

I missed most of the second half, and I was shocked to see that ISU had 1 more fumble (?) and missed FGs...and we still lost. Iowa had the one fumble (costly, sure, but it was early in the game) and no missed FGs (even had one bounce off the uprights and go in).

Boise was camouflage in that bowl game also. Totally unfair!

As a Hawk fan, I've had time to digest this terrible, terrible loss and come up with a reason why you guys managed to somehow beat us.

1) Iowa Corn needed a good game for its first CyHawk matchup. Also, they needed to make up for the whole trophy fiasco.

and

2) ISU needed a morale booster. They also need to show potential conference suitors that they can beat real teams. Thus, to add to their resume, ISU asked Iowa to help them out. Kirk, being the nice guy he is, obliged, giving ISU a much needed win.

That's how you jokers beat us.

Honestly, that Shontrelle Johnson fumble didn't really matter because it was equaled out on Coker's fumble soon after. And then ISU scored a TD. Basically it's like the two turnovers didn't happen. That first turnover probably would have been 6, though, the way ISU was moving the ball on that first drive.
