Me and my sister had a discussion during the game yesterday regarding the amount of times the fight song was played. I got to the point where I didn't even want to stand up for it anymore though I did anyway. It's great but when overplayed you almost regret when it comes on. Also, I feel uncomfortable singing a song about football at a basketball game it just doesn't make since. I wish our fight song was neutral for all sports. Every yard for ISU doesn't fit in well 10 times at a basketball game.

Simple solution: use the video board for promos but the band should provide all the sound. When the song of the day/game promo comes up - it should be for what song the band plays. When they have the basketball shell game on the video screen - the band should play a song and try to time the end of the song to the end of the shell game.

From my eyes the sound system/promos does more to kill the crowd than the band does.

What was that one song that was played with 4:32 left in the 2nd half yesterday during a KU timeout! Everyone was jacked to it and kinda sounded like "We found love" I cant find it anywhere?

They should shut down the band, install huge speakers, then bang 2 Unlimited - Twilight Zone on max volume at every stoppage of play.

DO YOU FEEL AAAAAALRIGHT????!?!?!?!

I can understand people saying the band doesn't do much that the speaker system can't do. It's a matter of physics that the band can't compete with a gigantic speaker system. The new director is building a good mix of songs for both students and alumni, accumulating arrangements unique to Iowa State. His goal is to be an entertaining part of the Hilton atmosphere that adds to the identity of the fan base. I think he has the right formula in mind, but it might take a year or two to get his full vision in place.

If you have serious concerns about the pep band, I bet you could track down his name and e-mail address and speak your mind. He's a nice enough guy that you might have a good chance at getting a response if you send a respectful, well-written e-mail as a fan.

What I don't get is the hatred/mocking of people in the band, I think it's just ill-informed. I'm not going to prove anything over a message board, so I'll leave it at that.

I think the crowds (both basketball and football) should stick around, and that the last song the band plays after each game be "Bells of Iowa State". Unfortunately, that dream will never happen once the band is eliminated and we go to 100% Jock Jams.

You will find that this is the case on 99% of topics relating to Iowa State. A lot of dumb***es with opinions on here.

The fight song is overplayed this year. It is obvious that it is played more this year than any other. I like the band but they play too much. There is no time in any game that the croud gets more pumped while the band plays. When they other team calls a timeout after a good iowa state sequence the band shouldnt be playing. They are a novelty to play a few songs and the fight song up to 4 times a game. The only timeouts that I and the students around me sat through were the timeouts where they played the fight song later in the game. It got obnoxious, for the first time in a long time people actually stayed standing up through the timeout in many timeouts. All of these timeouts had techno playing from the speakers. Not the band. The band should play some but cut it back that also pertains to your dumb *** chants, you guys obviously dont know basketball by your awesome timing and stupid *** chants.

If you'd read the thread, you would have learned 2 things, that when the band gets to play is dictated by the "man upstairs" (whoever that is), and that the playing of Fights is scripted. When the band arrives, there is a game ****** awaiting them. Pregame, they have some latitude. After pre-game ceremonies, not so much.

I can promise you the band doesn't like it any more than you do. One of the more powerful tools they have is the "Play/Sing/Play" version of Fights (where everyone but the tubas drops out in the 2nd "verse." It should NOT be played every game and it should ONLY be played in key moments. (i.e. don't play it at all when we're blowing someone out). But it's pre-scripted for (I believe) the 4:00 timeout, regardless of opponent or game situation.

If you don't like the selection of songs that the band plays, email the band department.

If you don't like them playing Fights when they do or as often as they do, email someone who is in a position to do something about it.

I think it is time for the band to go bye-bye at basketball games. They don't add anything that the sound system can't do better. In fact, the speakers pump in something and then the band chirps in and kills the enthusiasm.

And they play the fight song so much that people don't even stand for it every time. I went to the ISU-KU game at Phog and they played their fight song TWICE. We play it 6-8 times a game.

Bands were important before sound systems. Just an antique now.

I know I will get blasted for agreeing with you, but it's just how I feel. The best moments today were when KU called timeouts and they when straight to the speakers. Sadly most of our fan base consists of "Old Fogies"

Fortunately for you, those "Ole Fogies" are whats helping to fund this athletic department.

Correct (at least as-of 2009 when I was last in the band). Play-sing-play is scripted for the 4:00 media timeout in the 2nd half.

I've been avoiding this thread all weekend because:
a)I'm a former band member so I'm far from impartial; and
b)Even if I wasn't, it would just **** me off.

Let me just say this though, it is pretty damn weak to go after a group of students who put in a lot of time and hard work for this university for no other reason than having a little bit of fun and giving a **** about those teams.

College bands are not a novelty. Live bands are one of the things that make College basketball so much better than the NBA. Canned music has its place - I really like it when they play Sandstorm during a timeout when the crowd is already pumped - but there should be more live band than canned anything.
