Actually we ran some 3-3-5 vs iowa. There were several plays we rushed only 3 dlineman and it worked mostly. What I like about the 3-3-5 is we can sub 3 dline for 3 dline without much drop off. You cant worry about blitzing Baylor as it just doesn't work unless it is like 3rd and 15 or longer than yea bring some heat as u can't give Petty 5 seconds to throw.
Yes, I noticed a lot of 3 man rush against Iowa. Generally, I find a 3 man rush to be very frustrating, but it was effective against Iowa. I think it was effective mainly because it either confused JR or he was not quick enough on his reads.
There is a case to be made that maybe this is a good approach against a team like Baylor and a QB like Petty that gets the ball out so quickly anyway. If you are not going to get the QB anyway, might as well have the extra DB instead of an extra DL.
But I do like the occasional 4 man rush mixed in, but have it be a blitzing LB or safety instead of lining up four DL and letting Baylor know exactly where the rush is coming from.
