Chris - excellent info as usual.

In your opinion, what would keep CPR from being able to make a "big time/splashy" hire? It doesn't seem like money is too restrictive. Is it really just that difficult to get guys to Ames? Or do you think CPR will get his #1 choice?

Isn't there a "dead" period coming up on recruiting ? I thought there was a ten day period around the Holidays where recruiting was supposed to shut down (as far as any contact goes). Suppose CPR will devote time to OC selection then ?

1 - In order to make a "big time/splashy hire," Rhoads needs to be willing to give somebody a 2 or 3 year deal.

2 - Yes, it really is hard to get the kind of guy who will make a fan base gush to Ames. Doesn't mean it can't/won't happen. But this isn't south Florida or Texas. The recruiting hours are brutal for Iowa State's coaches. This is why when people make the "Baylor can do it, why not us?" argument, I cringe. Think about the recruiting hours that those coaches put in (which is still a lot) compared to Iowa State. It is a tough job.

3 - Hard telling on the No. 1 choice. I don't even know what his list looks like so that is an impossible question to answer at this time.

Funny you ask...I really was planning on taking a few days off next week. Not sure if I will now or not.

Here's my concern with this Chris (please feel free to poke holes). Rhoads should have all the information he needs to make an accurate assessment of Sturdy and Klenakis. If he is looking around, wouldn't that mean that he's not comfortable giving these guys the reins? And if he ends up selecting either of these guys, wouldn't that be considered a letdown that we must have missed out on one or more better candidates?

If Rhoads felt that either Sturdy or Klenakis were the guy, why wouldn't they just be announced now?

Honestly, I think you're reading into things here. I mean, sure, he probably does know what he has in those guys. But wouldn't he be doing the program a disservice by not seeing what else is out there?

It's a good idea to look around even if you think you've got a pretty good answer right here. What if the ISU AD had just said we won't find anything better than promoting one of these assistants and didn't call Johnny Orr when they were looking for a coach? Heck, no one saw that coming - the guy was pretty much fresh off the National Championship game. I realize that we don't have exactly the same situation, but think about it.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Rhoads may think Klenakis and Sturdy are fantastic candidates but knows he won't be doing his job if he doesn't at least try to find someone even better. He'll at least interview some others just so he can know for sure who his best candidates are.

Apart from that, it's just nice to know that there are possible "big" candidates that are interested. It don't think it was that way when we hired Mess. If you think about it, we do have some good selling points in what we are willing to pay and the fact that our talent is young.
