Some one needs to start it this year, so I will.
My wife and I found our first ones last night in Dallas county. 4 little ones, but Morels nun the less. They were very cold, meaning the ground is still to cool for the big push, but should be here in a few days with the sun.
Summer has offically begun, happy hunting, and beware of the ticks!!

Gave it a shot Friday but came up empty-handed. I've heard they've been finding a few but all pretty small. I agree, I'm gonna give it a couple more days and then hit it again.

My dad found 6 or so tiny (no bigger than a thumb) Morels on Easter Weekend.
If it stays warm and sunny, next weekend should be some good hunting.

Found 6 little greys monday morning. Its been too cool overnight still and it was surprisingly drier than I expected. Hopefully will be giving it shot later this week....if it warms up at all.

I don't post on here much anymore but I still read and I had a little something to add to it. I'm out on vacation in San Francisco right now and I went to the farmers market today at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadaro and a mushroom retailer was selling them by the pound for $58.00. I thought that was pretty steep but then I thought about it for a while. I'm not sure where around the bay area they had the weather conducive for morels to grow. I'm sure that is probably why the price is so high here.

I know at farmer's markets in chicago they can go for upto 100 bucks a pound. the going rate seems to be more around 60 or 65 though.

I went out and looked a bit yesterday and it was surprisingly dry as someone else said. The humidity is low, its been windy, and its still cold at night. Not good.

We are pretty much done with mushrooms down here in KS/MO. We've had good amount of rain right before the season (2-3 weeks ago), all of the shrooms were HUGE.
Ticks were also on full force. My buddy came home with over 20+ ticks on him (was fully covered). My in-law told me that they had tons of shrooms last weekend (100+) in Lake Monawa near Council Bluffs. I guess Iowa was week to two behind KS/MO.

Good luck ya'll!

Is there anywhere around Des Moines to buy them?
Obviously I'd prefer to hunt them, but not sure if I'm going to get a chance this year.
My Grandma has a lot of woods on her land in Illinois, just across the Mississippi, and thats where I normally hunt for them. But, this year is looking tricky.
Id still like to go buy some though if they are available anywhere.

Found some mix of grays and yellows around Chariton this weekend. Remember again, don't celebrate Bin Laden's demise by wearing red white or blue, still turkey season until the 15th.

Where does one find morels? Not asking for your secret location, unless you want to give me that around Ankeny... I'm just wondering if you find them deep in woods next to trees, around rocks, etc?

Usually on the edge of timber and most of the time under multiflora rose bushes.

Wife and I managed to get out for an hour tonight and found 38, 25 were in one spot around one tree and the rest scattered. About half were 2 days old and the rest were fresh. Still have hope for Sun. if we can get a warm Sat. to pop a few more.
Happy mothers day family mushroom hunt.
