Offical Postgame thread

lol, wow, the negativity from some people. Seriously, after the last two years what did we expect? New staff, new offense, bad D learning a new system, imo, we really shaked the bad off in the second half and started to look like a team. Granted, we've got a long ways to go, but if the timing clicks and we can tackle a bit stronger, this team has a bright future. This team has some real play makers. If we can just get everybody clicking on the same page, a few good things could happen this year. As I've said with every post, we've got a long ways to go, but I haven't been this excited over a mediocre win in a long time watching the cyclones.

I think it will be better if the headphones in the booth are working.

And did anyone think we were holding back part of the playbook?
 
So far tonight we have had some people wanting to bench AA and others already calling Money a bust. God some people in this fanbase are just so god damn negative :no:
 
I like the offense. For as much as Chizik talked about ISU needing yards after the catch or run, it is Rhoads that improves that.

Little concerned about defense still, but I really like Sims play and I think that a little more consistence and our defense will be good enough to win games.

What I saw the most is a team that is still learning and I think the difference between this and next week will be monumental.

What I liked:

Coaching. No penalties, no issues getting plays in.....they looked like they knew what they were doing, unlike last year with Chizik.

Robinson looked good. Quick, solid moves. I think they will use him more on passes out of the backfield.

Safeties -- Sims played really well and Smith seemed better.

Lenz on punt returns. Nothing flashy tonight, but seemed solid.

Mahoney is a good kicker!!!!

What I didn't like:

Arnaud didn't look sharp throwing the ball. Missed several open receivers, didn't lead others. Couple of nice throws to Hamilton though.

Defensive line and linebackers. Front 7 has a LONG way to go.


Overall grade of C-. My hope is first game jitters, rust, whatever. Need a big improvement to beat the Hawks next weekend.

Mahoney may be a big weapon this year. He looked solid from 50, and was dead-on from 57, but just needed some more leg. I could see him hitting from 55-57 with the wind.
 
I only caught the second half, but my expectations were met -- not exceeded, but certainly not less than.

The Pros

  • David Sims. Sims was absolutely all over the place. He was jumping in to blow up runs, finding his way through blockers to get to the outside, breaking up long plays, and making hard hits all night. The pass defense as a whole looked fairly good.
  • Running game. We were fairly unstoppable in the running game, but had a balanced pass attack as well. ARob played a solid game, Arnaud was smart on the ground and ran tough, and Schwartz at the end showed promise that power back we can use in certain situations.
  • Receivers. Hamilton is officially out of the doghouse and in the endzone. Two touchdowns, nearly 100 yards, and most surprising was his ability to get free of defenders and run smart routes despite his speed. His hard work was evident and looks to have paid off. Reynolds was shaky in parts, but picked up a half dozen catches and showed why he's fought his way up the depth chart.
  • Discipline. This team is infinitely more disciplined and controlled than last years' squad. Still had a couple big hits, still played with fire, but played much smarter and limited unnecessary penalties and stupid mistakes.
  • Kicking game. Mahoney really impressed me with that 50-yard kick. Wasn't sure he had it in him, but it's probably because I'm an Iowa State fan and ISU kickers always give me feelings in my stomach similar to my ex-girlfriends. Definitely gives some more trust in the kicking game for the next year, and picks up from a good freshman campaign. Brandtner was solid as always.
  • Pass defense (in parts). Parker looked good in the final quarter, picking up a couple sacks and showing that ability we all saw in his first game as a Cyclone a couple years back. Good to see him rewarded, and hopefully it is a sign of what is to come this season. The last couple of series showed that we can be an effective team if we can force the opponent to pass -- but obviously that will be an issue in itself...bringing us to...
The Cons

  • Run defense. Doesn't need much elaboration, but when NDSU kept the ball on the ground, our defensive line got manhandled. Also some difficulties keeping up laterally to prevent runners from getting to the outside. A few missed tackles, but improvement from last year. In short, there is no reason we should give up 209 rushing yards to a FCS team, there is no reason we should give up 146 rushing yards to an FBS back. We have a lot to do in this department, and I feel it simply cannot be a quick fix, and our offense might have to be counted on to simply overpower our shortcomings on defense.
  • Inconsistency on offense. The defense has to get more stops to keep from staying out on the field and being drained by these double-digit play and 5+ minute drives, but the offense does very few favors. I worry that a high-energy offense like the spread can pay off if we get in a groove, but might exhaust our defense and snowball very quickly if the offense get shut down by an opposing defense for a couple successive early series.

I know our front 7 lacks talent, but are they should be able to still dominate NDSU. The thing that scares me about the d-line is that we don't have any freshman talent. Front 7 recruiting needs to be major priority.

Nobody seemed to cover the flats.

Zone read needs some work. According to Bruns, Arnaud made the wrong read about half the time. Arnaud's throws still seemed to sail on him and were behind his receivers.

Offense needs work but has a lot of potential. Ran the ball better than I expected.

Special Teams got the job done today. Coverage was solid along with Lenz. Mahoney had some great kicks!

Yep. Smart choice IMO. Iowa was obviously watching tonight. Can't wait till the 12th now! Although I should be satisfied for tonight.
