I flipped the TV on late last night and curling was on so I figured it's about that time to start a thread on this.

Are you looking forward to watching the games? Any particular events stand out? Any that you just can't stand?

My wife is a huge Olympics fan so I won't be able to escape these for the next few weeks. I like watching luge, bobsled, short track and curling (for some reason), but I end up watching just about everything since it'll be on non-stop.

The time difference (I think it's 15 hours) makes it a little odd since we're always watching re-broadcasts of live events, but it's pretty par for the course for most Olympics.

Curling is the ****. Idk how people don't find it entertaining.

But I'm excited to see what SK does for the Opening Ceremonies. I'm with you that the tracked sports are the most interesting to me. Bobsled, Skeleton, Luge, Speed Skating, and the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard stuff is always fun to watch.

Figure skating is like gymnastics to me. I'm not exactly dying to see it, but I understand the magnitude of what it means to win that medal, so I always tune in.

I like that some of them get to call themselves "athletes" when they probably get winded getting out of the car.

"Slide, fat man, slide!"
You ever do intramural curling at Iowa State? That winded me every year and I thought I was in relatively good shape. I think everything on ice wears me out more, though.

I don't think I get more legitimately nervous for any athlete than when I watch skeleton. They are a special kind of crazy.
Another type of crazy I enjoy tuning into... Ski Jumping.

Hockey. Are they not having NHL players in the olympics this year? I thought I remember that being a possibility.

I absolutely love the Winter Olympics possibly due to my unhealthy obsession with snow. My favorite events:

- Cross Country Skiing, especially the relays, and the combined events like the biathlon and Nordic Combined
- Downhill skiing. Slaloming is for pussies. What's the point of turning on a perfectly good slope. If I get a empty slope like that I'm straightlining until my skis start to wobble.
- Bobsleigh
- Speed skating. Mostly for the Dutch women.
- Curling

Lindsey Vonn is always uber-hyped by the media, but she is must-watch tv. Good or bad, her runs always end with something spectacular.

The U.S. Olympic Curling trials were held here in Omaha and we attended every session. We even got to go down on the ice a couple times and learn how to curl. It is incredibly more difficult than these Olympians make it look.

The strategy and ability to place a stone where it needs to be is such a skill, anyone who looks at it and thinks it is simplistic and not even a sport needs to try it first. It is highly entertaining once you learn the rules and understand the strategy involved and the years of practice and skill it takes to push that 42 pound stone down the ice and stop it with often only less than an inch leeway to differentiate between a good shot and a mistake. I guess I'm biased because I got to meet all of the men and women on our Olympic teams and so I have a more personal interest than I otherwise would. But we do really have some good curlers representing us.

I like to watch curling but that's about it.

I wish they would move indoor volleyball to the winter Olympics since there is still beach volleyball for the summer Olympics.
