Battle is a nice player but he kind of plays a position that we already have a lot of guys (forward/wing). Tre, Omaha, Milan, Watson, Ward. Now he's good and I'd take him but we really need a C and at least 2 guards that can score

Lipsey and Biliew are all-conference level defenders. No one returning or signed is a proven, high-level scorer. We need scoring A LOT more than we need defense in 2023/24
The way our defense is set up, it takes all 5 to make it work. Even if you had 3 great defenders, 1 average one and 1 bad one, the average and bad one are going to have offenses set up to exploit them.

I do somewhat hope we get away from this way of thinking this offseason. Defense is great and all, but we had some horrific offenses stretches this year. A little variety in the way we recruit isn't going to hurt.

IMO if you are going to be a defensive team, every player has to be all in. A defense is only as good as its weakest link.

Fortunately, there are transfer players who are solid on both ends of the court

This year specifically I'd like to go after power 5/6 conference guys that were starters or meaningful contributors. Seems like last season everyone who was a committ or one who we had high interest from was low to mid major

I would think that with the composition of our team, we are going to be very, very attractive to a really good shooting guard.

I've just already seen a few people on here talk about how a guy isn't the type of defender TJ wants as though the pool of guys who are both high-level scorers and defenders is limitless. We have to prioritize offense and trust the TJ can will them into playing defense.
I agree, those people don't know what they're talking about. I don't think Milan Momcilovic is coming in here as a high level defender, but TJ sure as hell wanted him. I think TJ can turn about anyone into a decent defender. There's nothing inherent with Grill or Kalscheur that make them great defenders. Grill can jump, but neither are overly athletic, long or laterally quick. I think we can bring in offensive minded players and teach them to defend.

Not sure Garcia has the defensive chops to play for TJ.

I think the defense is going to be a mindset, and philosophy for the team going forward, but I'm not certain it's going to be major factor in recruiting.

More likely, TJ will tell recruits the way he wants them to play on defense, and if they don't want live up to his demands, then they won't play.

Check out this link ... to defend at a high level it may not equate to jumping and running, but you have to have a very good "starting point" and train the rest ... https://www.businessinsider.com/kawhi-leonard-nbas-best-defender-trained-like-cornerback-2016-3?op=1

Get your checkbook out. Players transferring within the power 5 teams are usually looking for a paycheck.

This. Any good P6 transfers don't have to look for anything, they will get offered a paycheck, some probably before they even announce they are entering the portal. They used to call this tampering, but since there are no rules anymore, not sure what to call it.

It's still tampering, but there's no good way to prove it unless they're complete idiots, and even then, the school would just look bad trying to fight it.
