The NYT had a podcast last week that talked about how the home insurance industry was losing money in 20+ states. They also mentioned how it was hitting unexpected areas, and that example was Marshalltown.

Hearing Cedar Rapids mentioned caught me off guard as well.

So is this next round supposed to be worse in the DSM area? Do they know when it's expected to hit? If school doesn't let out early I'm trying to figure out what to do with my kids...

Give it time, they'll let out early. The announcements are starting to roll in.

First question - do they know how to swim? Second question - what would @snowcraig2.0 do?

I'm just trying to save myself some cash by avoiding the counseling that would be required if my son gets stuck on a bus during a bad storm. Kid got his mother's fear of storms. As a ride-it-out-on-the-porch-with-a-busch-light guy, it truly breaks my heart to think about what he will miss out on if he can't figure out a way to address his anxiety.

For property types it's the hail in particular that gets very expensive very quickly. Some insurers starting to pull out of states which is problematic if you are trying to get a bank-backed mortgage.

Just got our umbrella policy raise notice Friday.
I worked at WF Home Mortgage in the late 90's. My job involved forced place insurance on people that didn't have coverage. Even 25+ years ago, it was ungodly expensive. We nearly forced placed insurance on a popular actor and the premium would have been $25k+ per month. Just hazard, not wind, quake, flood, etc.

Wow! Sump pump ran for the first time in like a couple years. I did test it the last couple of summers to make sure it ran. Glad it does run!

If I put a funnel in a container, then dump as much water as I can in the funnel causing it to overflow does that mean the container below is automatically full?

Yes, because there will be another 10 inches of rain this month to keep it overflowing.

I'm in the same boat so completely understand. Despite all my issues, surprisingly I love storms. My kids have all my issues, but unfortunately it does include storms.

Nearby
4.3" of rain (actual measure) so far today. 30 miles east of Ames. Several area electronic gauges are showing close to 5".

For all the rain we had just 90 minutes ago in WDM, our business' parking lot has many, large completely dry spots.
