Theory - I think teams are using the Cubs **** ass pitching against them, knowing they HAVE to add. So I see a world the Cubs make a move for a less-exciting SP to try and “prove” they don’t need a TOR guy before nabbing Cabrera
I think it's a lot of things but this is a believable theory. Add in a pretty good farm system and a big market with lack of recent success. Opposing GM's know there's pressure on Hoyer to add. Also deadlines are just more strung out now in general. Expanded playoffs has a good amount of teams consider what way they want to go right up to the deadline.

Now that the Giants are selling, the price on Verlander can't be too bad. Would much rather have him than Charlie Morton. Can't imagine the Cubs aren't on his list.

Hopefully the first of a couple pitching adds. Assuming the cost isn’t much, this is good depth. Would actually be good with adding Soroka and Bieber for the rotation.

There are so many question marks when it comes to prospects that I care very little about giving up our 14th and 20th ranked prospects for a guy that was very solid out of the bullpen last year and gives you some added SP depth if needed

From my understanding, Soroka does not have a defined role, yet.

There’s a chance the Cubs still get 2 more SPs and this was leverage.
Not sure how this is leverage. If Jed calls another GM and says we aren’t overpaying for pitching because we’re good with Michael Soroka he will get laughed off the phone

That almost even seems too much for Soroka.
So we gave up the 3rd best outfielder in DSM and a low ball prospect for a proven MLB pitcher who is low hit/high K. He can start, be long relief or single inning guy.

Not much risk for what the Cubs gave up and my guess is they hope the Cubs pitching lab can find something.
