Monday morning update from NWS DVN.

Friday into the first half of the weekend there`s good agreement
on the pattern turning active with a trough ejecting out from
the southwest into the central CONUS. However, there is
considerable uncertainty and lower confidence on track, timing,
strength and subsequent forecast details. The question would be
whether or not some cold air can be ingested for some snow on
the backside, and this will be more likely with a stronger
system. This will bear watching for trends with this system in
the coming days, as pattern recognition indicates the multi-day
residence of the low in the Southwest will allow abundant
moisture to advect poleward supporting the potential for a
moderate to heavy precipitation event.
GFS, CMC, and European models are are agreeing right now of a rain event for central/southern IA this weekend. Of course, it's still early in the week, so things can change quickly

I could probably find this if I tried hard enough, but I would rather someone just tell me. Were there predictions that this winter would be lower precipitation compared to average? Or was this a happy little surprise (to me at least)?

So 50 degrees and sunny in Mpls. Wishing I didn't have a dental appoint this afternoon that will waste this nice afternoon by driving over, waiting and than sitting around to get an exam. That is not what you think you will get for an appt on January 30th.

You know, when outside in 50 degree weather today, I don’t miss it. Maybe I’ll look back come June when I’m having to water my lawn just to keep it alive and think maybe a little snow ain’t bad. But right now, I’m good.
At this point the ground is frozen solid and everything is going to run off. I have no problem with a wet spring, I'd rather deal with the rainy 50-55 degree days instead of 25 degree snow days.

Agreed. If I'm remembering correctly last year, central Iowa received majority of their snowfall during those two storms in early/mid January. Relatively quiet after that, then a bunch of storms and rainfall in late April through May. Much prefer the rain, sump pump, however, does not.

I thought I remembered hearing it was supposed to be a mild/dry winter. Don't remember where I saw that though. Also, I don't really trust any prediction outside of 2 weeks, so it was probably just a lucky guess anyway.
