On Murph & Andy today, Tommy Birch said that it’s not guaranteed the Sugar Bowl takes Texas if they lose and OU goes to CFP. He implied they could get some sort of waiver to not take a Big XII team. I thought it’s been establish the Sugar Bowl is taking a Big XII team. He must not read the forums on an hourly basis. Strange.
Why on earth would the sugar bowl not want Texas? They couldn’t get anyone better in terms of revenue for them.

Mandel is usually pretty dialed in on bowl projections. We will see but doesn't sound good for our Alamo Bowl chances (to read the actual article must be an Athletic.com subscriber):

"I’ve updated several of my projections based on new tidbits gathered Wednesday.

  • Washington State will most likely head to the Alamo Bowl. The game has no apparent interest in a 9-4 Utah team. Washington, if it loses to the Utes, would be more intriguing, but the opportunity to pit Mike Leach against West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen may be hard to pass up.
  • The Camping World Bowl in Orlando may now be leaning toward No. 20 Syracuse over unranked N.C. State for its ACC choice, most likely opposite Iowa State. If so, the Gator Bowl would snap up the Wolfpack, sending Miami to the Sun Bowl."

I’d rather play NC St in Orlando as I think they’d bring fans for a good environment. I can’t see Washington st or Syracuse bringing a ton of people to those games.

If we get Syracuse in Orlando, I would rather OU get left out of the playoff and play Auburn in the Texas Bowl
Definitely better "name" opponent for sure. Think we match up quite a bit better vs. Syracuse though. That Auburn run game versus our 3 man DL would concern me quite a bit.
.
Auburn DL (if their Draft guys play) is pretty salty as well.

Heartland College Sports has updated their bowl projections based off of learning that the Big 12 likes to send their teams in order to bowls. They now have us in the Alamo Bowl vs. Utah. They have this projection in the "if Texas wins on Saturday article", but based on what they say about the Big 12 it would be us in the Alamo no matter what, as long as OU is in either Playoffs or non-Sugar Bowl NY6 bowl. They said that they should go back and edit their first projections of what would happen if OU wins to have ISU in the Alamo after learning that the Big 12 likes to send teams in order. I think Heartland puts more effort into knowing the Big 12 and its bowl affiliated tendencies than national media coverage since they specifically cover the Big 12. Take it for what its worth though, because I've always understood that bowls take who they want regardless of what the conference wants after NY6.

That's nice of Heartland College Sports to put ISU in the Alamo Bowl, but it seems extremely likely that Alamo Bowl is WVU/Washington St., and ISU heads to Orlando either way.

This particularly bites for me, because I plan to go if its in San Antonio, and plan on not going to Orlando.

I'm in the same boat. Orlando doesn't really interest me while I'm 100% in for SA and have booked a room.

It seems to me that Heartland's connections have told them that the Big 12 strongly suggests/forces the bowls to take the Big 12 teams in order, so Alamo would have to take us regardless. Again, this is coming from Heartland. I do not know the repercussions the Big 12 could possible give to the Alamo if they go against their wishes or anything like that. I'm just passing on the message. But if the conference strongly suggests a bowl take a certain team, that would have to have some weight, right? I also put more consideration into a media outlet that focuses on Big 12 than other national media that barely gives the Big 12 any time of day. Like it was stated earlier by another poster in the thread, it seems like other projections are up to speed on the other conferences and guessing on the Big 12 teams.

I guess I could get some of this WVU over ISU in Alamo except for the following:

(a) ISU finished above WVU in standings.
(b) ISU will travel to SanAnt better than WVU. Dare to say 10,000+ stronger?
(c) Distance to schools favors ISU to SanAnt. And Orlando is much easier for WVU.
(d) WVU to Camping sets up a nice east coast battle of WVU/Syracuse.

Other than (early season) Heisman candidate Grier, can someone list one single reason that an Alamo Bowl rep would prefer WVU over ISU?

The Syracuse fans I know are pretty excited after not being to a bowl for 5 years and really like Babers. I'd expect them to send a pretty good amount of fans.

0% chance we drop past Orlando

I wish. My fear is that Texas loses badly to Oklahoma and drops from their #14 rating. Then the Alamo Bowl takes Texas. And Orlando may pick West Virginia because Grier is a Heisman candidate.

The good news is that Pollard talks about a Camping World Bowl rep who expressed regret at not picking us the last time they had the opportunity.

Sugar Bowl is going to take Texas if they lose
