IMO - If Lard leaves its not for the NBA. He is nowhere ready for that. Also, I think we will continue to play s lot of small ball, with situational two “bigs.” A lot of BB to be played, but I don’t see how you displace Jacobson as a starter. He is a freakin warrior. I would argue he is our best player through 5 games. Very solid, very consistent. Smart D, and seems to get 15 & 7 whoever we play. When (hopefully) Jacobson, Lard and Young are all ready to go, it will be interesting to see where the minutes go.

I’m really curious to see Lard play. I’m not sure the weight gain is a good thing basketball-wise. I didn’t think strength was a problem for him last year.

Hard to say about weight gain. Right now he has not proven that he has any range - I do not see him stretching the floor. He definitely needed added strength around the basket. Hopefully we will see the expected growth, through experience, of how to better use his body to control space both offensively and defensively. He can learn a lot from both Jacobson and Young about how to play post defense. Lard can out jump either of those two, but they know how to control space.

Hines interviewed Myron Metcalf in Maui during tourney..He was at a practice we had and said on the Pod that Lard was dominating practice..Anyone see Tx beat UNC tonight? We could see Lard and Jacobsen on the floor at same time a lot too.

It is not important how many minutes these players play when returning but rather the chemistry when the do return to the floor.

Another important thing...Halliburton makes our defense a whole lot better when he’s on the floor

Jacobson is playing the perfect style for our 4 out, 1 in setup -- he is solid on defense, always looking for boards, oftentimes has one-on-one match-ups on the block where he can throw a fake or two to beat somebody, and has just enough threat from the outside that teams cannot collapse on him when he sets a pick for the PNR for Nick or one of the guards.

Nick and Michael on the PNR has been deadly so far this year -- Jacobson setting a good screen, Nick baiting his man into it, and then either Jacobson rolling hard to the hoop or stepping back to shoot, and Nick almost always making the right read between giving it back, tossing it at the rolling man, going for the hoop himself, or pitching it out.

I do not want to disrupt that.

Then again, Lard projects as a good compliment to that, as well. He is all energy on the offensive boards and can beat people one-on-one on the block. He is not as fundamentally sound on defense as Jacobson or Young, but he has way more ups and aggression going for the block and protecting the rim. If we adjust our rotations to account for Lard selling out for the ball, I think, on net, our defense could be fine or better with him at the center.

Lard off the bench, if he is as good as @Beyerball just said, going as hard as he can for 25 minutes on the boards and running the floor, not worrying about fouling and mauling a few guys in the process, sounds like an absolute nightmare for somebody's second string or even some starters who we are already trying to run off the court.

I guess you could play them together, but that means benching one of our excellent guards and slowing down a little. I think Jacobson can rotate outside as a stretch, but he fights so hard on the boards and is good enough around the basket that I feel playing him outside is a hidden tax on missed rebounds and garbage points every time he is not there for it.

PNR with Lard hiding in the dunker spot in the flat has some possibilities, though. Prohm clearly wants to play a fast break game, too, turning on the jets once we get the ball, and, man, a fast break with Shayok, Wigginton, and Lard running the floor, the three of them going hard to the rim and looking to embarrass somebody, is going to be scary.

100% agree with the chemistry comment. The current group has it.
Love Haliburton. Again, agree about his defense, but he also brings 100% unselfishness. I think he adds a lot to our current chemistry.
BTW - thanks for posting the info on Metcalf, great to hear.

Love Jacobson but the one weakness in his game is rim protection, with an average shot blocking big, we beat Arizona. That will be a major factor in minutes IMO. MJ has been great but it seems like people forget exactly what Lard brings to the table. He isn't as skilled as MJ but Lard is really good offensively. He can hit the mid range jumper and the pressure puts as a rim runner opens the floor for everyone. Not to mention his energy, its a different game when he's on the floor. At full strength, with tons of other scoring options, Lard being a shot blocking presence may be important enough to sacrifice some of the offense that MJ brings.

Either way, this is a good problem to have. We've had really good teams that could barely muster up one big guy. Now we will have 3 that could all easily start.

Yeah because no one will visit between now and then, officially or not. Or have coaches watch them play, or inhome visits. Or tweet about how great Iowa State looks.

Thanks for giving me nonsense?

Not for 2019 they won’t be. We’ve signed everyone already and are full at the moment. You should move on to the 2020 thread.

So Wigg will 100% be returning in 2019? Wow, Christmas has come early. Perhaps you missed the memo that the staff is continuing to look at potential replacements for him for 2019?
The current year recruiting thread is also always the spot for highlights and game results of each player during their high school season. So thanks for nothing, I guess, Gunner.

Gotta give credit to Prohm, game last night and one on Sunday but he's still grinding on the recruiting trail. The staff is really recruiting Frenchy pretty hard over the past couple of months, looking like he'll be the top choice as the replacement for Lindell if he does declare for the NBA in the spring.

@AdamZagoria Steve Prohm of Iowa St will be in at Scotland Campus on Monday to see 2019 Clarence "Frenchy" Nadolny
